fenix 5X frozen > Garmin triangle

Hello,

got my 5X yesterday evening. Was very exited. Set it up, connected to mobile app, connected to Express, installed all updates and went to bed. When I woke up this morning the 5X was only showing the Garmin triangle. I can turn it of, but turning it on will just show the triangle again, not more. Tried to hard reset like the fenix 3 light/down/back, but it seems not to work. Connecting to USB doesn't work ether. Always just the triangle.
Is there a different method to hard reset the 5X then with the 3? Does anyone else experience the same?

Thanks for the support!

Ugh! Understood and not something we are happy to hear.

What software version are you currently running on your 5X? By sync we assume you mean once you've removed the device from the charge clip and the watch gives you some indication a sync is occurring? We want to verify you don't mean a sync via Garmin Express or via Garmin Express Mobile.

I have The sale problem since i bought my fenix5x with all The firmware Even with The 2.9
  • That also explains why I had this issue. For now I disabled segments.

Regarding your workaround: If I enable segments, Garmin/Strava automatically syncs popular segments besides my favorites. Is there a way to prevent syncing popular segments and only sync the ones I marked?

Yes, you can disable popular segments sync on the Strava website under "My segments".
  • Also have the frozen screen after importing courses (just simple courses created in Connect), had to do the hard reset (using Start en Back).
  • I run on version 2.9. When importing a couple of courses I created yesterday it freezes the watch. No weird characters in the name (well one of them had a dot in it, is that a character that causes a crash?).

Chill out! I am sure they will fix it, but I am also sure they are working on a whole heap of other things as well. You bought in a new watch very early and some bugs are sure to be found as more people test different options. If you feel like you are a beta tester then you can always return the watch and wait until it's more mature. Else, have a bit of patience and I'm sure they will get round to fixing it soon

I don't have such a black and white thought process to this. Everyone could do with more patience, but not everyone simply has the time to wait for fixes. Some people actually use the products they buy and others rightfully think it has a high price tag, so it should be built well. People might look at software and think it's not the physical build quality, but actually, you can be a sloppy coder just as you can be a sloppy mechanic.

I did my research before buying, so I was fully aware the watch might have problems but does that justify the bugs? £600 for a watch is a lot, the company will already know a fair bit about the software architecture from previous models and not only that, but I bugged and bugged Garmin to be a beta tester. Within five minutes of owning the watch, I had found bugs and I have found specific ways in which I can get bugs to show up. The information I can give Garmin isn't on the line of "the watch randomly crashes!" but rather, "do this, this and this, and then this happens". In addition, I think I have found a memory leak.

I've witnessed Garmin fight with another company on twitter to give someone a watch for free, yet five minutes beforehand they emailed me clearly stating they do not do that kind of thing i.e. no discounts and no freebies for help in return. I think I could have been an asset to helping them test watches and to a certain extent, I'm still willing to help.

Interestingly, when I have tried to provide information, they give me a huge copy pasted email about resetting the watch and how GPS accuracy can be slightly inaccurate. Not only is it irrelevant to what I'm mailing them about in most cases, but it doesn't alleviate any customer concerns. They could say "we acknowledge the problem and are working on it" or "thank you for letting us know about this bug" but instead it's more a "you've done something wrong or have unreal expectations about the watch and you need to reset the watch for the 50th time." In the end, I resorted to calling them useless and insulting their intelligence. It's not nice and it makes me seem cruel or angry, but I also think if more people complain like that, perhaps they'll change their approach.

It's not all doom and gloom. I managed to find a beta test Garmin email and they replied quickly with an intelligent response. They've told me to shutdown the watch by pressing backlight then back then backlight then back and so on, until it shuts down. This method doesn't actually work for me when the watches buttons cease to work, but they are acknowledging there is a problem. Lastly, fortunately for them, the watch in general is so damn good that I'm willing to look past most problems (providing I can get the crashing to stop) and there really isn't any competition, so that helps.
  • If you can get the watch to crash repeated with a set of instructions then I suggest posting here. There are people that read these threads with links into Garmin who, if they can replicate, will then make sure it gets looked at.

also there are Fenix guys who read these threads who would be interested in repeatable crashes.
