It's here, initial impressions

Fast background on me. I'm a runner first and foremost. Started Garmin with a 310xt (worked great but was for exercise only and wanted an everyday watch), had pre-ordered a sapphire Fenix 3 and returned at the end of my 90 day window because the accuracy was TERRIBLE in my opinion (averaged close to 0.05/mile short and looking at tracks it would cut corners so bad it was obvious that was the lost distance), went briefly to a 220 and liked it, 225 when it came out and liked it, 235 since it came out and loved it (retiring to probably become my wife's first GPS watch instead of using the iPhone), and now gray/black Fenix 5.

Initial impressions, I love it. Was very stressed about the size. I thought, for me, the Fenix 3 was enormous which helped to seal the deal on returning it. Absolutely love the size of the 235. I'll attempt to add a picture (F5 vs 235) but this thing is BARELY bigger (was considering the 5s but glad I did the 5 already). When face to face you can barely see the 5 sticking out around the 235. Including the bump (on the 235) the thickness doesn't seem too different but on the wrist inevitably the F5 will have to stick out more. NOTICEABLY heavier but in 30 minutes i'm already getting used to it (note the 235 is LIGHT) so the change is noticeable. Out of the box before even activating GPS the altimeter said 719' (sitting upstairs of my house but ground level around here is 700ish). Will be running a known route 8 miler tomorrow (off day today) and 18 Sunday and will probably follow the same route as I did 17 last weekend and then just add at the end to compare tracks and mile splits. If those go good i'm going to be very happy with the decision to pull the trigger on the F5. If not.....well i'll try to not think about that. I was happy enough with everything i've ever had on accuracy except the F3 so hopefully they got that right this time.

Edit: Sorry the picture flipped sideways, it's saved correct on my computer? Also on size note the F5 looks a little bigger maybe due to the "tabs" that the bands attach to that stick out different from how they attach to the 235. Also the bands themselves are almost identical in width to the 235 ones.

  • Congrats! And thanks for the update and pic. I have a 5 and a 5s on order and I'm coming from the 235 as well. I used to sleep with the 235 as you know it is quite light. Do you think you'll be able to sleep with the 5 on?
  • Probably not the best to answer that as I only slept with the 235 on the first few days that I had it and the novelty of that quickly wore off on me and never have since. It sits on the counter most nights or the charger every 4th or so days (just because that is/was my habit).

I kept my F3HR on my wrist during nights without discomfort. But same for me, I used to do it only at the beginning or short periods before a race to get an accurate rest hr.
Now, the F5 feels a little bit "tiny" compared to my old F3. You would barely notice it...
  • Thanks for the pic! I have a 230, and am very concerned about the size, so am waffling between the 5S and the 5. I think this is just one of those things you have to try out in-person.
  • Funny how many of us have burned through Forerunners ;-) I'd passed on the Fenix series until due to their "hockey puck" feel on my wrist and I was very happy with teh FR235 but I broke down and got the F5 (mainly for the advanced training analytics and ABC) and it came in today. ABC features are a bit disappointing (see https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?371978-F5-Barometer-settings-modes-issues) but I can live with that. I wasn't expecting any GPS accuracy issues as I thought this was something of the past but my first run is not promising at all with some slightly erroneous distance and worse some "wandering" tracks : https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?371929-GPS-Accuracy&p=958502#post958502

It's hard to imagine Garmin letting out an "outdoor" watch with issues like that but now I'm finding out they never managed to fix them on the F3 so I'm rather worried...
  • I just took two more pictures to post one of the 235 sitting on top of the F5 and one of them from the side. When including the bump from the side you cannot even see the F5 behind it and with the 235 on top from the camera you cannot even see any part of the F5 below, therefore no point in even posting the pictures as they simply become a picture of a 235 from the top and side. Physically standing over them the F5 does stick out just a touch more but it isn't much at all. Coming from someone that loves the size of the 235, i'll call the F5 essentially the same. It's heavier though, no way around that. Not even close. The 235/735xt are amazingly light.
  • I'm not sure a watch can be "too light" but the FR235 is pretty close to that definition I think ;-) I often have to check I'm wearing it and haven't forgotten it! The F5 is still a "light" watch in my book and it's no issue at all...now the GPS accuracy is another story :-(

Thanks for sharing your experience, I also have a 235 and can't decide between the 5 at 87 grams or 5S at 67 grams. I originally wanted to go for the 5X at 98 grams for trail running, but there's no way I'm long running with 3.5oz strapped to my wrist...it's one of those things I wouldn't mind at first because I'm excited about using my new toy, but eventually I'll begin to recognize the weight as a burden. All of them are considerably heavier than the almost non-existent feeling 235. Decisions, decisions...

Yeah, I really like my 230, but have never broken a watchface before... really don't want to have to worry about that with a sports watch.
  • 24hrs in with my F5

    What I like...
    • The size. Just a bit smaller and thinner than the F3 but feels more manageable on the wrist for me.
    • Built in watch faces are very customisable.
    • I have the Gray/Black. The bezel colour and finish is much nicer than the F3.
    • The QuickFit bands/straps are great. I just wish that there was some alternatives ones availble. I want a leather one.
    • Coming from the F3 (non HR) I'm quite liking the wrist based HR for daily tracking at least. I will still use a HR strap for activities.
    • Menu layout is much better.
    • The glass (I have non sapphire version) is much flatter than the F3 but is the same size. I have a F3 screen protector fitted and it is practically invisible.
    • Pace seems a bit more dynamic when running, could just be placebo. Will report back.

    What is ok...
    • I've only done one activity (over a regular route) so nothing conclusive but the GPS doesn't seem any better or worse than the F3. It's adequate.
    • The release firmware seems ok. As reported elsewhere, there are a few quirks with settings synchronisation with GC mobile. The F3 had these issues too.

    What I don't like...
    • The charging cable is rediculously short. Come on Garmin, another half meter wouldn't have hurt.
    • The price of an extra charging cable is silly. Can't wait for some third party ones to pop-up.

Overall, I've got no regretts so far. After having the F3 for two years without any major issue it's a nice upgrade for me.
