How to activate backlight when turning the wrist in Fenix 5

Hi there,

I just bought a Fenix 5 this afternoon and took it for a run. However, the backlight did not turn on when I turned the wrist so I have to keep on pressing the top left (Light) button whenever I want to see the readings on the watch. This is very troublesome

I did Settings, System, Backlight, and set Gesture = ON but still didn't work.

Any ideas and tip ?

Thanks
  • See my message above, have you updated to v2.40 ?
  • What setting do you have for settings: user profile: wrist? And is it correct?

    CW

    Yes, Wrist = Left
  • See my message above, have you updated to v2.40 ?

    Yes, mine is V2.4

    Connect to Garmin Express too and it said my Fenix 5 is latest and "up to date"

    What I have in Fenix 5 is exactly this:

    Settings > System > Backlight

    Key = ON
    Alerts = ON
    Gesture = ON
    Timeout = 30 seconds
    Brightness = 80%

    Changing the Timeout = "No Timeout in Activity" instead of 30 seconds makes no difference in my case ... my watch still doesn't turn on the backlight when i turned my wrist.

    Any ideas where I could have set the backlight to off like in DO NOT DISTURB or something like that ?

    Thanks
  • Hi there,

    I think I found the reason why my wrist turn was not activating the backlight.

    You see, when I was testing yesterday it was 2 am. I set my sleep time from 1am to 7am & also the DO NOT DISTURB option to ON. Once I turned the DO NOT DISTURB to OFF, the backlight was activated when I turned my wrist.

    I would also like to report some bugs. Not sure if this is happening to me alone.

    This morning, my Fenix 5 was able to activate the backlight when I turned my wrist.

    But then by lunch time, the Fenix 5 was again not able to activate the backlight when I turned my wrist. I have never changed any settings from this morning ...

    Then what I did was to goto the watch to select the Timeout = from 30 seconds to "No Timeout in Activity" and then change it back to 30 seconds ... and then sync to Garmin Connect Mobile (GCM) and it works again ...

    Could this be a bug ?

    Thanks

    P/S: Btw, what is the latest version of GCM on your iPhone ? Mine is 3.16.1
  • The gesture on my 5x didn’t work at first either, which is why I was on this forum. After giving up though, the next morning I found it worked perfectly every time without fail. It’s not really ‘solution’ but maybe just leave it in the gesture mode over night and see if it’s working in the morning.
  • Had same problem. Turned watch off/on and gesture problem solved. Software version 7.10.
  • My gesture function stopped working yesterday as well. All settings correctly configured and it is not in do not disturb mode. I've tried rebooting the watch multiple times. Very frustrating.

    I'm on software version 7.60

    Anyone have any insight not already covered in this thread?
  • Hi jimday1982

    We are troubleshooting an issue with backlight settings that some users have experienced with the 7.60 update. We apologize for the inconvenience. If you'd like, we have a file you can install on your watch that will fix the backlight function. I've attached the file to this post. If you'd like to install it, plug your device in to the computer. Open the "Garmin" folder, then open the "NewFiles" folder. Put the attached "backlight_mode_fix.fit" file inside the "NewFiles" folder. Now unplug your device from the computer and you should be able to reconfigure your backlight to the proper settings.

    Thanks,

  • I just got my f5 apac and I came from an f3 which btw is still good as new after more than 2 years. We are only in version 6 and I’m having this backlight gesture problem. Only update I got were the display and maps. Will the file attached work ?
    Can you allow apac owners to also upgrade to latest beta?
    I was not aware of discrimination coming from f3.
  • I added the file suggested by odsweng and backlight still will not turn on with wrist motion. I see that in the backlight settings the only options are "during activity" and "not during activity". I see nothing with regards to wrist motion.
