GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • Got my Fenix 5 yesterday and it's way better GPS tracking than when I got a Fenix 3 two years ago. Even better than my forerunner 630 that's kind of slow and can't count down intervals smooth at all. I have been missing a few features lately and can't stand forerunners touch screen, maybe my dry fingers fault but no problem anymore with Fenix 5.

So I'm very pleased at the moment.
  • Never been a fan of instant pace on any GPS so not sure you'll lose anything by using it. Using 1km laps would give you a better idea of pace anyway. But then, in events I wouldn't rely overly much on a technology.

I don't really use instant pace. Either avg pace or lap pace... but I just really don't like the fact that it's all over the place (unlike just about all my previous watches, tomtom cardio, fr235 and fr735).

I mean, it goes up and down with (over) a minute difference all the time, multiple times within 1k, which just makes me doubt what I see. Sure, on average it may even out but all that variation scares me. And I guess that's a direct consequence of the gps issues, so I mostly pointed it out as a symptom. But indeed, I do rely on technology as I am not experienced enough to run at a certain pace by myself (especially not in the beginning, way too easy to go too fast).

Point is, it just looks relatively crappy in my opinion at the moment.
  • Yeah, not too great either the HR... I forgot to wear my 735XT as well (comparing them was actually on eof the main reasons for running yesterday, ugh) which is stupid.

But it all seems way less smooth, maybe just a sw thing but kinda sucky to take the guess and also kinda sucky thay I don't have longer to test the fenix5 before the HM (only my 2nd ever, not taking any chances so I guess I'll be bringing my 735xt. Even if it's just for the run itself, I do like the F5 in all other aspects.

Will be doing a small last run on friday so I'll take em both with me then.

Is it advisable to put them both on different wrists? Or just a bit apart on the same...

I think dcrainmaker suggests different wrists.
  • I think dcrainmaker suggests different wrists.

Cheers, will try that next time...

Secretly thinking about modding the gps antenna as well btw :P

Basically with phones you can sometimes really improve gps reception by adding a layer of copper tape or aluminium foil as a boosted antenna kind of thing. Placing it in between the gps chip and case/antenna itself.

Just thinking about it because it would be fun to try mainly, and wondering if that might help (and if the F3 is as easy to disassemble I guess the same would go for the F5). Although the fact that I'm thinking about this is crazy enough already ;)

Currently my Fenix 3 gives better tracks and final distance with Smart Recording and GLONASS Off, than the Fenix 5 with 1s GLONASS On.
  • 935xt just announced
$100 cheaper, guts of the F5 in a plastic body. I'm betting this will have few GPS complaints.

Yeah, the plastic body though... Ugh, I really like the looks from the F5 much better then the 935 :/
  • Ordered to compare with my F5X- getting it delivered tomorrow.

F3 vs 920xt I'm completely with you. The 935 vs F5, I'll have to see both in real life to see HOW much better looking the F5 is. Weight, size, price, and performance might tilt the scales for me.
