GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • Today I have better accuracy than the first day in the same track and the same training.
GPS only, I wait 1 min.

13,4km --> 300m less than the real distance. It is good for me and the same distance that others gps.

    Today: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1645470887 (stryd metrics)
    other day: https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1632949944
  • You can look at whether the unit plots a track point 100m off the trail, or stuff like that. But that's not what we're talking about. We're specifically and 100% purely talking GPS accuracy in tight (trail) situations.

Splitting hairs i know, but are we talking about the resulting track and how that fits to the map, or the GPS measurement of distance? One is affected by smart recording, the other - distance - should (apparently) be unaffected.

Interesting! I see that you run with Stryd- would you say it provides a big enough benefit in training more efficiently or is it more of a gimmick?
I am considering buying one but it's not an easy call to make..

Fellnr gave the Stryd a good review.

    http://fellrnr.com/wiki/Stryd?

"Stryd is one of the most useful and impressive running technologies available."
  • I think it's more effective runscribe because the data is similar to garmin but with not all stryd.
Vertical rate, TCS are lower than the real.
    Power data is very good.
He has a large back community with biomechanics and career specialists.
  • Adding to the gps accuracy, tempo seems all over the place too (which is not crazy when it's based on wacky gps data).

I ran at a pretty steady pace imo but if you look at the pace (zooming in/pressing the fullscreen zoom toggle at the right of the graphs) you can see it goes up and down like crazy. THere's really a minute difference in pace over shorts timespans, and this was just a steady run without any change speeds.

This has almost tipped me to taking my 735xt to my HM this weekend as I don't really trust the Fenix5 so far...

Other ppl having issues with pace?
  • Definitely very different to my 920XT - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/1645485495

I wonder if it's down to the GPS being overly sensitive? Your run obviously wasn't steady pace as you do have a higher paced interval around the 6km mark. Looking at the recorded splits, your overall pace isn't too bad though.

What's with the HR too? That looks a bit choppy as well.

Looking at your run, and comparing with my 920, I don't think I'll be moving anywhere anytime soon.
  • Yes agreed, I was saying the same thing :)

Sorry, I thought you were saying the opposite...which, did seem slightly out of character for you. My bad. :)

Yeah, not too great either the HR... I forgot to wear my 735XT as well (comparing them was actually on eof the main reasons for running yesterday, ugh) which is stupid.

But it all seems way less smooth, maybe just a sw thing but kinda sucky to take the guess and also kinda sucky thay I don't have longer to test the fenix5 before the HM (only my 2nd ever, not taking any chances so I guess I'll be bringing my 735xt. Even if it's just for the run itself, I do like the F5 in all other aspects.

Will be doing a small last run on friday so I'll take em both with me then.

Is it advisable to put them both on different wrists? Or just a bit apart on the same...
  • Never been a fan of instant pace on any GPS so not sure you'll lose anything by using it. Using 1km laps would give you a better idea of pace anyway. But then, in events I wouldn't rely overly much on a technology.
