GPS Accuracy

So it begins.

I will have mine Fenix 5 on Saturday and will start doing comparisons to an Ambit 3 Peak. I don't have an F3 to directly compare to as of now.

Anyone have an F3 and F5 to compare?
  • Yeah, the plastic body though... Ugh, I really like the looks from the F5 much better then the 935 :/
Fiber reinforced polymer, same as F5. Difference being, the bezel material. FRP on the 935 vs. stainless steel on the F5. That could be the differentiating factor of 935 having better overall GPS.

True about the gps (probably), but still... I really prefer the F5 appearance. Sure, it's not really plastic, but it comes across to me like it in the pics I've seen. The F5 just looks more high-end to me, but that's personal of course. Something important to me though as I use it as my daily watch.
  • I'll have to see it in real life to make the call. The F3 and F5 are nice looking and I've gotten plenty of complements on the F3

I'll bet the GPS on the 935xt will be stellar. Of all the watches I've used, the 920xt (which had the same innards as the F3) was the GPS king.
  • ^^^^^+1 on that ^^^^^

As for getting compliments about what I wear on my wrist? Clearly I don't wear a watch, or move in circles, wear people look at what I am wearing on my wrist. Never had any comments whether it's the 920 or my Apple watch. But then I don't give a damn anyway. I bought the 920 to wear for sport, not fashion. It does the sport extremely well.
  • Add me to the wonky F5 GPS tracks. I have a bit of fun with different GPS devices and decided to test some on a drive from home to work.

    • Garmin Oregon 700 (GPS + GLONASS, most frequent)
    • Garmin fenix 5 (GPS only, 1 second)
    • Suunto Spartan Ultra (GPS only, best)
    • Suunto Ambit3 Peak Sapphire (GPS only, best)

All were placed in the front passenger seat with screens facing up. The F5 was laid out flat on the seat, as was the Oregon 700. Both Suunto's were propped up so they wouldn't move.

The Oregon, I had let it warm up for a moment since it doesn't have the luxury of an EPO.bin or any satellite pre-caching mechanism. Both Suunto's I synchronized via USB cable 10 minutes prior. The F5, I synchronized with GC on an iPhone a few minutes prior. The Oregon and both Suunto's got lock very quickly while in the car and sitting still. The F5 took at least a minute or two.

The Oregon and both Suunto's are spot on, darned near perfect. The F5, not so much; it's drunk. This is the third time I've recorded my driving route with the F5 and it's pretty darned bad, and I'm honestly surprised.

edit: see new information in later post, #250
  • Wow, pretty scary...looks like the UltraTrac track I got during a walk at lunchtime !

I'm not in a place where people routinely comment on my garb as well. HOWEVER these devices have become great sport watches AND 24/7 companions. One of my primary reasons for leaving the 920xt was because I didn't like looking at it and the GUI of the Fenix was/is much better. Also, while the 920xt had better GPS performance then the Fenix 3, my F3's GPS performance has been excellent.

How long do you wait after you get the GPS lock on the Fenix before starting the activity? We've been through this before with the Fenix 3. It's good practice to wait at least two minutes after getting the GPS lock before starting the activity. If the Fenix 3 doesn't have a really good lock early on, often times it will never get a good lock.

Maybe the F5 is better placed with the 6'o clock side facing up?
