fenix 5 has arrived!

Fenix 5 in hand…

It arrived today and I will take it out on it’s 1st journey tomorrow.. I mainly cycle but also run and swim for triathlon training..

I already sold and shipped off my fenix 3HR so I won’t be able to provide any comparison shots. This is the Slate Gray with Black band version.

The watch is smaller and lighter than the 3HR and it feels good on the wrist. The HR bump is noticeably less. After initial boot and setup, the watch acquired GPS signal fairly fast. The new menu system is pretty slick but I haven't really has much time to dive in..

Just a quick post for now with some box and unboxing shots.. Tomorrow I’ll be doing a 38 mile bike ride and I’ll compare it’s stats against my Edge 520...

Do you notifications work correctly? I cant seem to get mine to vibrate when I get a notification. It lights up the screen and makes a quick noise but no vibration

    can you test yours?

No I don't think they are...
  • Just picked up a slate grey (non-sapphire) locally

After reading all these threads I decided to call Playmaker's, and the had 2 slate grey models in stock, so I got one. I did pre-order a black sapphire, so I'm not sure yet what I will do with that. I think the display is better than my Fenix 3 HR, but that one is sapphire and that might make a difference as well. So far I really like it. It seems small since I'm so used to wearing the huge 3 for so long.
  • Cool, congrats! Yeah the sapphire might be slightly less clear but I've not noticed a difference with previous fenix devices.. I am debating on cancelling my BH order for the 5 sapphire and just getting a screen protector for my Slate Gray.. I don't need wifi and I couldn't care less about the yellow band the sapphire ships with.. Tough choice..

I'm with you on that. I'm currently deciding whether to cancel my order with CT and get a screen protector (or not), or to just wait until the black sapphire arrives and compare them. I have never used wifi on my previous Fenix, so I won't miss that and won't wear the yellow band either. I'm also liking the slate grey bezel at the moment.

Nice to see you've changed your mind https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?368438-Sapphire-version-Why&p=943004#post943004 ;-)
  • I didn't say I was going to get a screen protector for it, I said I was considering it.... I do think they look tacky but I also like the color the the bezel on the Slate Gray.. Decisions, decisions..

Anyone had chance to record some routes yet to see how the accuracy is?

The Fenix 3 was great... other than it had useless GPS tracking; I tried 2 units and ended up sending it back for a refund (as did thousands of other people) - but other than that I actually really liked the watch.

Tempted to get an F5 (probably the X version though) but since GPS tracking is my main reason for getting one, would be nice to see if they have actually sorted it.
  • I did a 38 mile bike ride yesterday and also recorded on my Edge 520..

I didn't save the 520's track though.. I did however check speed and distance on the fly and they were both almost spot on the same. It's a route I do often so when I get a chance later I'll look at the ride a little closer and see if there are any odd GPS recordings. I don't think they will be as the end milage came in exactly where it should have for that route..

    Sounds promising at least.

The F3 suffered heavily from nearby trees or buildings, even just running around the block near normal houses would cause it to track 50-100m off course; and the performance was similar when riding the MTB near or in woodland.

Even years old low end Garmin watches or phone apps would track much better.
  • I looked at my ride from yesterday a little closer and it's fine, for the most part... I did have some minor drift when downtown and surrounded by tall buildings.. When downtown it drifted over to show me pedaling down the center of the roadway instead of off to the side in the bike lane. Everywhere else I saw no GPS drift whatsoever and it was spot on...

I don't cycle in heavily wooded areas so I can't comment on how it might perform under those circumstances.

I am doing a 34 mile route today and will update if any issues arise..
