5x v. 5, is the mapping worth it?

I currently have the fenix 3 looking to get the 5 or 5x, do you think the mapping is going to worth the extra price and size? I like how the 5 has the longer battery life, not sure if the mapping function on the 5x will be useful enough.
  • It's a matter of what your use case is. If the size of the F3 isn't an issue for you but you need, or would just like to have, more map capabilities then the F5x would be a good choice since there is no difference in price between that and a sapphire F5.
  • My only battle with getting the 5 or the 5x is that I would like the novelty of the maps and having a bigger processor and memory. But at the same tine I want the Black 5. If there was a black 5x I would have no decision to be made!

I didnt know that the 5x doesnt come in black, that might be dealbreaker, love the color of my black 3. I also, see the maps on the 5x as a novelty, is the bigger processor and memory going to noticeably different from the 5x vs. 5?

Yeah only Slate Grey for the 5x.... its pretty darn close to the black. But its not black! As for the tech details. I am sure Garmin will lock down the extra proc and memory to be only utilized by the mapping app. I just always have the what if!
  • yea im torn as well with the what ifs but would really like to try out the mapping feature beforehand, not sure if it will be worth the extra $$$. while its cool to have, prob wont use it more than a couple of times

Fenix 5x has much more RAM then other F models, so it will have more than 1 MB RAM for CIQ apps compared to 128KB with 5/5s versions. It was the same with Epix too, as it has 32 MB RAM chip; why not to utilise it.
CPU may be the same or some cheaper one but running at higher frequency like Epix vs. F3. We'll see when it's released.
  • I use Google map on my phone for mapping. Somehow when I go cycling or run/walk, I still bring my cellphone.

Same here with the google maps. While, the turn by turn features on the watch would be nice, would it be useful? Would be awesome if they could integrate nautical charts with depths but I'm guessing its going to drain the battery quickly. Cant wait to see some demos of it in action online.
  • There are also plenty of free charts in raster and vector JUST not sure which format would run on the watch ?

I also find the watch a bit redundant when sailing as things like VMG on the F3 require orientation of the watch to be in the direction of travel and it remains to seen if this will be fixed in the F5
