Fenix 5S for a man

I admit it, I have small wrists. I've worn the 42mm (the larger size) of the Apple Watch and I think it looks like the right size for me so I am thinking the 5S will be the best choice (42 also vs 47/51 for the 5/5X) for me. For a watch I would wear most the time and likely even at night the smaller size brings advantages in weight too, any other men thinking to get the 5S? The Garmin site makes such a big deal over the 5S being their new design for women that it gives me pause but I think that many mens watches are 42mm or even smaller in the real world...
  • IMO a silver bezel will show wear less than a bezel that has a finish of some sort that can be nicked or scratched off.
  • They have different colors, you can get an all black 5S.

I plan on getting the all black I think. However R_Tellis is right. I had a Gray bezel F3 and the gray bezel shows scratches worse then a polished/shiny bezel.
  • I'm also considering a Fenix 5S as a man, but i'm still not sure since I like the brown leather band and as far as I can see, that one is only available for the 5?
The F3HR is too big for me and my brother has the 235 which fits nice on my wrist, so I think the F5S will be perfect for me.

In two weeks there is a fair in the Netherlands (Fiets en Wandelbeurs). I hope Garmin will show the Fenix 5 models there, so I can decide which one I should order.
  • Publicly coming out and saying this watch was targeted at women is the stupidest possible thing Garmin could have done in marketing this product.

42mm is very standard for a men's size watch. It's the exact same size as the larger Apple Watch, as well as the Forerunner 230/235/735xt (VERY popular with dudes).
  • Actually the FR235/640/735 has a 45mm diameter, the difference being that the lugs don't stick out like on the 5s and it's a lot thinner too at 11.7mm vs 14.5mm.

I'm still curious too see what that a 42mmx14.5mm watch with lugs that stick out a lot looks in the flesh. I'm sensing that it might look a bit odd...

I'm totally on your side. If only... If only the F5s and F5 had the lugs from Chronos - that could have the perfect design!
  • Where did they say the 5S was for women?

If you go to the garmin homepage and select "Women's wearables" the 5S will appear, so I guess that's enough statement from Garmin in terms of Marketing.

To the size/ratio, when calculating that, the 5X would have the same number. Will have to see with my own eyes at a fair or in a shop before buying. I don't mind the lugs. I would just prefer having a sapphire option with silver bezel and a brown leather strap available for this watch. So, I might either go with all black and sapphire or wait some months hoping Garmin introduces more color options.
  • And this : https://the5krunner.com/2017/01/05/garmin-fenix-5-for-women-girls-and-other-members-of-the-lesser-sex/ ;-)

As for the ratio it is in fact quite different :

    5s : 42 over 14.5
    5 : 47 over 15.5
    5x : 51 over 17.5

17.5mm is humongous, the 16mm of the F3 were bad enough...but 14.5mm is a lot for a "small" watch, but yes, will have to be seen in the flesh and tried on before deciding.
  • Even if they don't specifically say that it's a "women's watch" there were a fair few videos from youtubers at CES talking to a Garmin rep who brought up women as being a target market for the 5S.

In reality though it was something that they pretty much had to do because not many women were/are willing to wear a watch the size of the F3 unless they really needed all of the features. The fact that it's still large enough to not put off men and there are still 2 other watches in the series that are bigger means that they now have all of their bases covered and increased the potential market for their top of the line watch.

I campaigned long and hard for a pink 920xt but got nowhere.

The article parodied the coverage in the 'professional' media, who should know better. There was no link to Garmin marketing. If you look at the images displayed in the articles (before any of them could change it and deny writing it ;-) ) you will see that male and female writers alike are equally as guilty.

Then again. Offence is usually 'taken' rather than intended to be 'given'

maybe no-one really cares. I did like writing the article though :-)

FWIW: I'm getting a man's Fenix 5x with extra chunky strap unless the 935xt comes out at the same time (which it might yet).
