Release date thread

I think it will be good to have one central place to have the latest news people here about the updated release date. DCR said it looks like early March. The garmin site says 5-8 weeks but thats the default time on all new products. Everywhere I read it says "By end of Q1" which is the end of March. Rei still doesnt have it listed yet either. Has anyone heard anything more specific?
  • REI won't list them for preorder until their expected date is 30-days out. Once they are listed on REI we can then assume the actual release date..

Everyone keeps saying this like it's always been this way but it absolutely hasn't been in the past. REI is just learning from their mistakes (their system auto-cancelled a bunch of preorders last time around).
  • This has been REI policy for a very long time and it's a fact..

    Snip from that page:

Both backorder and preorder items automatically cancel if it takes REI more than 30 days to send them.

This is why they do not post anything for preorder unless they expect them in that timeframe...

That is the policy but he's just saying when the Fenix 3 was announced REI had it up for preorders. It took more than 30 days for some to get it. They did cancel some orders. This time around it seems like they are being more patient because they probably got a ton of inquiries about the Fenix 3 when it was over 30 days late
  • As I understand it, irrespective of REI's policy on preorders, the Fenix 5 series will be released sometime soon.
  • "Sometime soon" in the Garmin world is a very loose term. :)

Based on everything I've been reading and DCR's input, I'm not expecting mine until the end of March at the earliest, especially with Chinese New Year halting production and shipping (which is still ongoing).

I think it will trickle out very late Feb / early March but very, very few orders will be filled until late March / early April. I have no knowledge of this at all but I'm wondering if we may see staggered shipping between models with perhaps the "standard" 5 arriving slightly before others? We shall see... I was a Garmin user for 9 years and left for Fitbit across the board in 2016 for a variety of reasons. I miss Garmin. So back to the Fenix and can't wait.
  • What's strange is that BH have some (F5/Slate/Black) shipping on March 16th and others (F5/Slate/Black-Bundle) in Mid-April...seems odd as there is no shortage on the HRM-TRI AFAIK ?

In the past I've seen Amazon dates be a week or so out (either way) but they aren't usually massively wrong. Suggests that "general availability" will be late March.
