Topomaps for Fenix 5X

According to Garmin spec. : "...GPS watch with full-color TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps and other outdoor navigation features"

Does it mean that colour topo-maps will be available for USA only?

How about EU and other countries?
Is it possible to use routable OpenStreetMap for this model?
  • What is this 24k, 50k, 100k in regards of topomaps you all are talking about? to me, 24k is a running distance not a measurement of a map.

This is a colloquial abbreviation of the map scale. 24k is 1:24000, 50k is 1:50000 and so on.
  • For 1:25000 you need to buy for example an additional garmin topo Germany v7 pro for another 130 €).

I think on the 5x it will be the same 1:100000 topo map...(Europe version)

I've found in Amazon.es, a Topo Spain V6 pro (current V), for 64€ plus p&p, and in 'Craig list' (well, sort of...), for as little as 35€.
    😀.
Official price in Garmin is 129,99€, and Spain is a LOT SMALLER than Germany... 😜
  • Does this mean that it can generate routable running maps even out on the trails (or is it just for street maps?). It would be nice if the Fenix 5x can generate courses for me for trail runs, I sometimes get lost when making different loops.
  • It all depends on the maps you have on it. The 100k US TOPO maps the 5X will come with in the US have no routable anything. The 24k maps you can buy from Garmin have routable roads and sometimes trails, as do maps from OpenStreetMap. In my area the 24k Garmin maps are missing lots of trails, while the OSM maps are complete. The cycling maps the 5X is supposed to come with and must use to actually route are based on OSM data, but I don't know if they include trails. (I have them on my Edge 1000 but haven't looked to see what they include.) There's plenty of space on the 5X, so you'll be able to put more maps that it comes with on it, and you can always remove maps if they're not doing you any good. You should be able to find maps with routable trails.
  • The openstreet maps on GC are routable on trails BUT I am not sure how this will work on the watch as far as routing as GC requires a good bit of help at trial heads to go were you want

    Forests rendering in the negative?
  • Not sure why people want to buy maps. The openmaps on the internet are just as good if not better and best of all they are free. You just select the area you want and download. Save yourself $100 or so.
  • Some Garmin devices do "relief shading" so you can see the topography without paying attention to the contour lines. The Epix doesn't, but maybe the 5X will. Garmin TOPO maps look really good in BaseCamp. They don't do this with OSM maps.
  • The garmin topo germany v7 pro (winter edition) shows you slopes > 30° and you can use the map for "active routing" - that are reasons for me to have this map.
