Topomaps for Fenix 5X

Sadly I think you're right, they won't be transferrable. If the watch came with 25K OS for the UK built in that might make the price justifiable but to have to then add it on or go with a free one at over £700 it's just too expensive for what you get.

Base version will be £630, in fact, but yeah still a lot of money if you need to add maps on top of that.

Can you not buy the base version and then add free maps for example Openstreets maps, same as those I use on my Garmin Edge 1000 ?

The "base version" of the 5x includes the Topo maps already loaded.

Well in the US they're 100k USGS topo maps, pretty much the same as the paper version. Not as good as the 24k TOPO maps that they sell, which are also equivalent to the USGS 24k counterparts. The difference between them is that the 24k have routable roads/trails, where the 100k do not.

I just checked buy.garmin.com, and the very expensive topo maps they sell for the UK claim to use OS (and you're not likely to get them on the 5X, since they cost almost as much), while the affordable ones claim to use OpenStreetMap.

The garmin epix (Europe version) is sold with a preloaded topo Europe (1:100000, not routeable). For 1:25000 you need to buy for example an additional garmin topo Germany v7 pro for another 130 €).

I think on the 5x it will be the same 1:100000 topo map...(Europe version)

Rendering of maps (e.g. icons of points) I can see the same system like in Epix. :(

What is this 24k, 50k, 100k in regards of topomaps you all are talking about? to me, 24k is a running distance not a measurement of a map.
