Topomaps for Fenix 5X

According to Garmin spec. : "...GPS watch with full-color TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps and other outdoor navigation features"

Does it mean that colour topo-maps will be available for USA only?

How about EU and other countries?
Is it possible to use routable OpenStreetMap for this model?

    CALLE Centro

Also, I've found: "Full-color TOPO U.S. mapping that comes preloaded; map data is optimized for at-a-glance navigation and location tracking on your wrist"

How to add to-map and optimize it for Fenix 5X? Do I need special software for this?

The specs for the European version indicate Full-colour European TOPO included. So depends on where you buy it. I expect you will be able to purchase additional regions and install the maps using garmin express.

There was an app on the Fenix 3 that could convert GPS info into OS grid references (UK) which was great to pinpoint a position, so found the mapping feature on the Fenix 5X exciting as a navigation aide but I'm just wondering how useful the small screen will really be compared to the paper OS maps I use when walking. I like the 25k scale but guess the TOPO maps won't support this scale and will be more like 100k?
  • The watches like the Epix have come with 100K maps the 24k are quite a bit more money and really big so in the USA there broken up into 4 regions
  • The european version of the epix came out with a (non routeable) topo map of Europe. I think, it will be the same one on the 5x.

On epix, you can download free osm (topo) maps and purchase (topo) maps from garmin...

Can you do routing with the osm maps?
  • On epix you can do routing on a routeable osm map - so I thing that will work on f5x, too...
  • It will be interesting how the map's work as we know on the 5X it make a road route of your chosen distance automatically and will route you to POIs as this is a big 5X selling feature

The blank at this point is routing on topo
  • The german garmin website says, that the fenix 5x supports active routing.

The routeable garmin topo germany v 7 pro has active routing capabilities:

"Offers ActiveRouting, allowing you to customize and specifically plan routes for the entire road and trail network. The activity-specific map displays highlights of suggested routes in addition to dedicated biking and hiking routes."
  • I wonder if there is going to be an OS option for UK users ? would love to use the OS maps from my old edge 800 bundle but I suspect that's locked to the SD card :(
