Topomaps for Fenix 5X

According to Garmin spec. : "...GPS watch with full-color TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps and other outdoor navigation features"

Does it mean that colour topo-maps will be available for USA only?

How about EU and other countries?
Is it possible to use routable OpenStreetMap for this model?
  • Swedish maps

Anyone know how to get maps with elevation contours for Sweden?

You should find the requested country there : http://garmin.opentopomap.org/

    Region locked maps?

    A quick noob question:
If I understand this thread correctly then it is possible to buy a F5X in the US (preloaded with US Topo), return back home to Europe and load Topo maps for my area free of charge (OSM) but with the same features (contour lines and auto-routing) as if I bought the EU version?

I am also interested in this question.
From what I understand upto now, the 5X is delivered with different mpaps on the device based on the Region.
Now my question is, can you put the original Garmin maps from other regions on the device trough Garmin Connect? Or is this limited trough a Region lock on the watch?
I understand you can always put additional OSM maps on the watch, but my question concerns the Garmin maps.

In case the Garmin maps indeed are region locked wrt the watches, can someone say which are the different Regions and corresponding maps the watch is sold in?

    Thank you in advance.
  • For what it's worth: I have the APAC (Asia-Pacific) version of the F5X which gives excellent map coverage of Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand etc but are completely useless for my region (northern Europe). So I have uploaded some excellent, routable and free OSM maps to my watch.

I have not found a way to upload the Garmin TOPO-maps for my region unless I buy them. And with Garmins ridiculous price level (around GBP 139,- per map) that is completely out of the question.

I finally figured out my problem with the Topo maps - I received a EU version instead of US so the only Topo maps on the device were for Europe. Returning to amazon and will try to find another one.
  • I bought my Garmin Fenix 5X from a friend, who bought the watch from China. The Watch has China Topo maps. Any suggestions, as to how to load US Topo maps on it?

Either you buy US topo map from Garmin, or you install via basecamp some free Open street maps for US.

The TalkyToaster maps are orders of magnitude better than the Garmin UK Topo maps and significantly cheaper.
  • As are numerous free OSM maps, no need to pay even for the TT ones. I use the free ones from here and find them far better than TT

Ok, I found the issue. I turned off the basemap and the cyclemap from the map settings on the 5X. The standard base map continues to show until you force a redraw using zoom in/ zoom out or a pan/ zoom. Then, the whole map redraws leaving the Topo maps complete with contours. Very nice

Tried the same thing, it still shows streets. Is the topo map you're showing in an area that has streets?
  • If you're in a flat area with streets, you won't be able to tell the difference unless by chance there's a topo line through the area, since topo maps show roads and streets. You need to go (or pan) to somewhere with topography to see a difference. The area shown above is definitely not flat, so the topo lines are prominent.
