Topomaps for Fenix 5X

According to Garmin spec. : "...GPS watch with full-color TOPO U.S. mapping, routable cycling maps and other outdoor navigation features"

Does it mean that colour topo-maps will be available for USA only?

How about EU and other countries?
Is it possible to use routable OpenStreetMap for this model?

    Maps for running or hiking

I've use my 5x in the uk and Tenerife, the preloaded maps from garmin are fantastic and will auto route across footpaths (or not, it's a config option). Are the maps as good as OS, er no.. but you can zoom in and trust me you'll never get lost. the open maps used appear to have most/all of my local paths.

For what it's worth. I've also downloaded various free uk maps and did find one that showed more detail and contours.. but.. in practice the garmin maps had enough data and were easier to use, the paths were more defined.

If you are running or walking unknown trails in the lakes (even the downs) without a real map as backup, you are an idiot! Fell running rules are there for a reason.

I just wish there was an easy way to create a course on a mobile phone.

    Brilliant watch..imho
  • Good to know

This is good to know - I'm off to Tenerife very soon :)

I've had my F5X for a few days now and already found 2 cut-throughs in my local area that I didn't even know existed (and admittedly one error on the map, but if you ignore it the watch re-routed anyway).

Very happy with it and the maps. I've just connected to Garmin Express and there's 7GB of West and East Europe Topo Map updates to download which is taking a while, but good to know that there are updates available.
  • Deleted pre-installed maps

I accidently removed the pre-installed maps of europe. Does anyone know how to re-install these?

connect with Garmin Express - you should be able to install the maps again

I only have the option to reinstall the coverage maps. Not the topo maps. Strange. Thank You.

Thanks. I followed those steps and topo 100k was one of the maps listed, with a green mark to the right. All the maps have the green mark, so I guess they are all enabled. But in the Map activity I still see only the street map. I get the feeling I'm missing something really obvious here.

I know exactly what you mean. My watch shows TOPO Australia & New Zealand Lite V5 in the list, but I can't see contour lines despite the blurb stating they are shown at 40m intervals. I have tried turning off the basemap and leaving just topo activated. I have also tried changing detail levels to high and low without success.

Be interested if this can be figured out as well. Seen some people creating good topo maps for Europe but none for us Aussies yet.
  • You have to be scrolled in to a close-enough range for all the topo lines to show up if you have 24k maps loaded.

Hold left center, select pan/zoom and use "+" to come in "closer" -- if the 24k map is enabled the contours will show up. Back off too far and they're suppressed if too close together, which makes sense if you think about in that they would blend together and make the screen unreadable if the resolution is panned out too far.

For the standard maps I have installed (Topo Aus & NZ Lite v5), the contour lines are supposedly every 40 meters apart. It states clearly on Garmin's own info page: https://buy.garmin.com/en-US/US/p/504827#overview. I don't see them, regardless of whether I am zoomed down to 5m, or out to 500m. I have tried with details set to high, normal or low. In the below pics, the detail level is set to high.

    1.2km

    200m

    80m

    ad nauseam down to 5m.
