Fenix 5 Plus does not load maps properly with 19.10 and TopoActive 2022.10

I have a Fenix 5+, upgraded to 19.10, and maps TopoActive Europe 2022.10

The watch does not display correctly the maps during the activity : it's slow, parts are blank, or it's even full blank. And it's draining the battery faster than before.

Everything was working fine with previous firmware and previous map.

What I tried:

- reinstall the maps on a new computer (to force a new download) : no change

- reduce the map details in the activity  setup : slightly better, but still lot of blank displays when running in a city (in Paris for example)

- remove the map "contour" in the activity setup : same as above, still super slow to display the map and partial display

  • Hi, all the activities were concerned, and even more in dense areas. I have downgraded to 18.0 and TopoActive 2021.10, and everything is ok.
My assumption is that the new map has much more details, and the Fenix 5 plus can’t manage so many details in cities.

  • I have a 5x+ and the TopoActive 2022.10 works very fast. Before going back to the old map you should have done some more tests to understand if the problem concerns only your device, or the 5+ series (yours has the WI-FI antenna on the cChassis, my 5X+ has a PCB antenna) small constructive differences that can cause anomalies in one of the 3 models. Why didn't you also try resetting the clock?

  • The 22.10 maps work faster than 21.10 on my F5+ with 19.10, especially in cities, so I cannot agree to your conclusion.

  • If things work proper then I don't see any difference between TopoActive 2120.20, 2022.10 and OSM maps or between 18.00 and 19.10 but I did not test all combinations. My assumption is that in case of this very slow maps problem something with a cache of map tiles in the software does not work properly/is corrupted etc. Deleting and reinstalling maps then possibly forces the cache to reset in contrast to just reinstalling without deleting in advance .... just guesswork.

  • TopoActive Europe has 12.5 GB?!

  • Another hypothesis could be storage fragmentation. I don't have enough technical knowledge here, but what made thinks work again on my watch was when I deleted the map 22.10 files before reinstalling the 21.10 with a manual copy. Given the big size of the files, this could explain ?
    I didn't took time to try again with 2022.10 + 19.10, because I need a working watch, not a development platform :)

  • ActiveEU.2021.20 = 8.9G
    ActiveEU.2022.10 = 9.6G

  • Just to help others in the future: There is another user that was able to solve the lagging maps by deleting files on the watch and reinstalling them afterwards: Fenix 5 plus : slow loading maps and lags SOLVED

  • I took time this week to do this test : the watch is still in Firmware 18.0, I removed all 2021.20 map related files (*.img, *.gma), and I copied manually the ActiveEU.2023.10 using Android File Transfer (for some reason Garmin Express update was failing)

You can find the dowloaded maps on your mac in this folder :
    Library/Application Support/Garmin/Express/Maps/ActiveEU.2023.10

-> the 2023.10 map is well displayed even inside high density city (Paris)
