Fenix 5 Plus does not load maps properly with 19.10 and TopoActive 2022.10

I have a Fenix 5+, upgraded to 19.10, and maps TopoActive Europe 2022.10

The watch does not display correctly the maps during the activity : it's slow, parts are blank, or it's even full blank. And it's draining the battery faster than before.

Everything was working fine with previous firmware and previous map.

What I tried:

- reinstall the maps on a new computer (to force a new download) : no change

- reduce the map details in the activity  setup : slightly better, but still lot of blank displays when running in a city (in Paris for example)

- remove the map "contour" in the activity setup : same as above, still super slow to display the map and partial display

  • I did a full data and settings reset yesterday. I did a run today, and same, the map is completely blank even after 15 minutes of run...
I have now to figure out how to revert to previous firmware / previous map and try again.

  • I installed the unofficial maps and now it works as expected.

  • Some time ago I had also a similar/same issue. Maps were loading extremely slow and when moving during an activity I sometimes had a completely blank map display and took several minutes until the map display was updated. Rotating the map was also extremely slow.

I solved it by deleting all map related files (*.img, *.gma) directly on the watch and reinstalled the maps using Express.

DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND I ADVICE TO MAKE A BACKUP ANY FILE BEFORE YOU DELETE THEM!

  • I managed to put back firmware 18.00. It's a bit better around my home, but still very blank and slow inside Paris.
I found a backup of the Garmin Express folder with the previous TopoActive ActiveEU.2021.20. I'm not sure if I can just drag / drop the files in the watch, and I'm a bit hesitant to delete anything inside the watch like you did (*.img / *.gma)

  • I absolutely understand your concerns. Copying the files to your PC before deleting them should reduce the risks. For me it was the last resort after various resets and a firmware downgrade.

Similar to you the issue got worse the more map details had to be displayed. In Berlin it was absolutely unusable.

  • Try using another sport profile (MTB or bike or hike) and see if the map works well.

  • After a backup, I have deleted the TopoActive 2022.10 from the watch and I've copied the TopoActive 2021.20. The watch has successfully loaded the maps without any issue.
My first conclusion around my home = Firmware 18.00 + TopoActive 2021.20 is super fast. I have to test later inside Paris.

  • On my F5+ with 19.10 the Topomaps 22.10 and OSM maps work fast and without any issues, so I don't think it's a general problem. For each activity I switch off the maps I don't need.

  • This option didn't solve your problem. I think the problem comes from the activity file ("running), that's why I asked you to try if the map worked well with the MTB profile.
