Garmin segments completed during an activity

Hi,

After a cycling activity, a friend of mine user of Fenix 5 Plus, cannot see in Garmin Connect (nor Garmin Mobile) the segments he completed during the course.

I am not talking of sending segments to the watch; just view the segments completed during the activity.

I always get this info both with my Fenix 6 and Edge 830.

Is it linked to the device? Anything I might be missing?

None of us are Strava users.

Thanks for any clue!

  • Segnents have to be sent to the watch first, otherwise the watch doesn't know them and they are not visible during the activity! I have a few segments stored on my F5+ and they are always detected during an activity.

Segments which are not stored on the watch should be visible in GC after the activity is uploaded. This has improved a lot over the past, a few years ago Garmin Segments didn't work reliable. So it's not a general issue anymore.

So your friend should check if he has the latest updates installed and if he really finished the segments. Some segments reach to crossroads and if you cut the corner you do not finish them...

  • Thanks RunR.

    Appreciate your reply.

Yes, I mean segments in GC after the activity. Not in the watch during the activity.

We bike the same route together, and while I see eveery day 10, 20 or 30 segments completed in GC (and I can see the ranking applying filters to each one and so on), his "segments" tab only shows "no segment has been completed", what is not true.

This is for every route, day after day. I understand some segments might not be considered completed due to cutting corners, but  there must be something else ...

  • That's weird. What happens if he downloads a segment to the watch, is it shown during an activity?

You see quite a lot of segments! My last 50km ride on a quite popular route had 5 Garmin Segments, one with 3500 persons. On Strava I had 19 segments on the same ride, but as you mentioned you are not at Strava, this cannot be part of the solution.

BTW did he check his privacy settings?Thinking

  • Yes, the number of segments in our usual routes is high. (some of them have no interest though)

We will try to download a segment to the watch; never done before.

Regarding privacy of the activities, his are shared between the group of friends (like mine). Anyway privacy of activities do not change the segments you see; if they are not public you are not inclueded in the public ranking, but you can see the segments completed, your personal ranking, etc

And I do not know if there is any other specific privacy setting that might affect the segments, but we will check as well.

    Many thanks again for response!

  • Little slow answer here ... Ended up in here looking for an answer to another problem ...

Anyway: If you (or your friends) have enabled Strava Segments in Garmin Connect – you (they) will not see the (Garmin) Segments on the activity. If you / they switch back to Garmin Segments they should get the segments displayed on the activity (also past activities). They will loose the Strava to watch feature until they switch back to Strava Segments.

You should find the option to switch in the Sements widget in Garmin Connect Dashboard.

Don't understand why Garmin have choosen to solve it like this – as Garmin Segments is still interesting even though you are using Strava Segments.

Edit: You should also be able to change the settings in Connect Mobile under Training / Segments
