Music breaks up during activity

Hi all, does anyone know if a specific update has affected music playback? Using a F5+ and Spotify app and it all worked flawlessly a year ago with great playback. Now, I still get great playback in Spotify but as soon as I start an activity it starts to break up as if the bluetooth radio is being used for something else (I have no BLE sensors) or the processor is now too busy to play the music. I have several pairs of earbuds all of which worked fine before and all of which show this issue so I'm certain it's a watch issue and pretty certain it's an update that did it.

Any ideas? I'd happily run the older firmware if anyone knows when it last worked! I can't be arsed calling Garmin support and getting a pointless refurb swap out - their lack of interest in fixing bugs depresses me :D

Thanks all!

  • Never mind, when I flicked back to the main forum I saw a post about heart rate broadcase and got me thinking. I turned that off and it seems to have sorted it. I'll continue testing and report back if that's not the fix

  • Hi, having the same issue for long time... after spending lot of energy with support of Garmin and Jabra, having replaced earphones just to find out the issue is actually on Garmin side, going through several FW updates and waiting for fix -  I gave up finally. Yes, there was Garmin FW where I have no or extremely rare issue with music drop-outs, but my bad, don't remember the version. Please let us know if you will find out something interesting with the broadcast setting.

  • after testing for a bit longer it seems this didn't fix the issue during activity so I think there is a bug in there somewhere.

  • Same problem - plus more...  Using apple ipod pro earbuds.  I get some of the break-up sounds others mention - almost like a skip..  but my music also completely stops at times (seems random).  When I look at music controls - the song is playing - and I can pause, skip, stop using the earbuds.  But no sound.  I have to go back to the library and start the library again.  The break-up/skip seems random and pretty consistent during the entire activity.  The full stopping of sounds happens a couple times (seems like it has always been 2 or 3) during a 40 to 50 minute activity.  I am going to play w/ the noise cancel and "spatial" sound settings (turn them off) before I connect to the watch and see if that makes any difference.  the second issue (no music) is also in the Fenix 6 forum (https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-6-series/248767/no-music-during-activity) with no resolution there.

  • looks like F6 users are having success by downgrading the bluetooth firmware. Now I just need to find an older one for F5+!

  • I will look as well when I get some time.  However - I have no idea how to install just the bluetooth piece - are there instructions anywhere you have easy access to?

  • I caved in and called support. They swear it's a hardware issue so I have a brand new F5+ on the way to replace mine. I'll report back but I find this unlikely to work given it used to work, and still works as long as I don't start an activity. We'll see though, should be here next week

  • I just did the same - got so frustrated during a workout today...  After the long conversation that it is the fact the watch is on my left hand...  they actually had me test putting it on my right...  but new one is on the way.  Not sure if it is hardware - but I am hoping it is something weird with just a couple watches and the new one will be flawless.

  • My replacement arrived today and does not fix the issue, so it is presumably a software update that broke this. I have no idea how to convince Garmin of this since they don't allow downgrading of the watch so I can't prove it to them, and neither will they investigate since support just swaps out watches. Really frustrating as this watch used to be awesome!

Even more annoying is that the new one came with v13 installed but Spotify will only download onto the current version of firmware, so even if I downgrade I won't be able to get it working as I have no way to get a copy of the older Spotify app.

  • Well that is very disappointing...  I upgraded to this watch only for the music feature so I could leave my phone at home.  Why are there not more people talking about this issue - I do not see a lot of traffic about it.
