Fenix 5+ power drain

Hello,

I've got a battery drain issue with my fenix 5+. They were not in use for the last 2 months. After powering up, updating (to SW 11.00) and charging the battery life became completely disastrous. In smartwatch mode it consumed aroud 0.4..0.5% per hour. But after first outdoor activity with GPS it started to burn the power like demon. Average consumption ranged from 1.5% to 2% per hour and never less. I tried rebooting and soft reset; this helped until the first GPS activity. After that the power drain returned to the extra level. All external sensors (including wrist HR) were turned off. Moreover, I've tried the beta SW (11.73) - nothing new: after resetting everything looks fine till the first GPS connect.

I love my watches, but the power drain is far off the specification and dissapointes me. I see that without any sport activity battery works well and could hold the charge up to 8..9 days. But it doesn't fit me.
Do you have any idea how to troubleshoot this?

PS: I tried to fully discharge and recharge the battery to recalibrate the circuits.

Thank you in advance.

  • It is totally annoying that everyone of you seems to make it and only I am not able to. For all last try, would you please be so kind and write step for step what exactly you did to downgrade? Since everyone succeed it must be a mistake by me. I followed every hint in this thread (and all of the other treads, too). Thanks in advance

  • Yeah, it's really important that everyone with this issue reports it to garmin. In front of the fact, that they don't give an official statement and they don't stop the actual FW.

  • First I downloaded this link from this thread....

    http://ftp-stud.hs-esslingen.de/~mbr/fenix5XPlus_1174Beta.zip

then extracted the GUP3153. GCD from the ANT_BLE folder....

Placed that in the RemoteSW folder in the watch.

Disconnected.. then I was prompted on the watch to update.

  • .... Then I used the public candidate 13.00 download link on the 5plus series main page here on the forum ... I put the gupdate. GCD file from the System backdate folder v12. 00 straight in the Garmin folder of the watch .. Unplugged and again I was prompted to install the new update.

    Hope this helps.... Good luck.

  • Yeah, same as I have on my 5+

  • Raz3r. Sam201176's steps are exactly the same steps I did for my 5+

Just out of curiosity; anyone know what "BMX" is? (Picture of Settings->About in post by Sam201176). It is not listed on my F5Plus.

  • I was curious about that to.... What does BMX stand for... I only came across the words "Behavioral Modeling Extension" for a software related meaning... But  that's obviously not correct either..

It would be interesting to find out.

BMX is mentioned in the context of updates for FR945 and Fenix 6 too.

Just guessing.. 'MX' often used for Message Exchange and ANT+ and internal sensors basically work with messages, so it could be related. Lots of software works with messaging. What the B could be.. Basic?

What intrigues me, is that I don't see it (V12.71) and you do.

    Apologies for going off-topic BTW.

  • After installing software version 12.00 and ANT/BLE 5.04.... I've had a battery drain of 0.1-0.2% per hour through the night... With 13.00 and 6.06 I was getting 0.2-0.3 through the night...(if I restarted my watch because of the drain after activity )... up to 1.6%per hour without restart... so already the watch battery will last longer without the restart.  : -)

Next test will be headphones and activity, then monitor the drain afterwards without a restart.

    Great so far : -)

Ps... I'm using a stock watchface without seconds.

And the better Battery widget I recently helped with in the store.

First pic... Over the last four daytime hours.

Second pic is from 23:35 last night to 11:40 today... Just over 12 hrs...
