Hello everybody,

Does somebody know if is possible to install topographical maps (topo v6) on a fenix 5x plus sapphire? I think it is not possible because because the watch has only 15 MB storage capacity available. But I might be wrong. Does anybody know?

  • Unfortunately no Harry. There is only one Topo Full map available for AU/NZ from Garmin and that's the one I used. Having said that, they have recently introduced a HEMA (specifically for four wheel driving) map plus a Topo Full / HEMA combo which is of no real interest to me except that it would be more up to date than the 2014 v6.....

When you download the purchased maps from Garmin, Express "activates" it which creates a key. I suspect this key contains a signature which serialises the map to the specific watch that it was purchased for. To test, I copied the map and the key to my wife's 5s+ and it ignored the map completely. When I remove the map off my D2 Delta, as long as I copy the key file as well I can then re-upload it and the watch sees it and uses it. I wouldn't be confident that the serialisation process would work properly with the SD card version as you would need to copy the map directly via USB. Express will not activate it.

  • Hi Sam,

If you ever get stuck with maps, you can manually delete all the maps and reinstall them. This will force the watch to reindex the maps. Works very well. The trick is to only delete the maps you can redownload..... (yes, I am very glad I made a backup first!!!).

What I recommend if it is of any help with map issues, use Express to reapply ALL the available maps for your device. Then look at the date stamp via a PC of the recently touched files within the Garmin folder. You can now easily distinguish what files are maps and what are not (like the timezone file, but the name of the file gives this away anyway). You can then delete all the newly refreshed maps, reboot the watch which will now show no maps are installed and reapply the maps again using Express. This will force the watch to reindex which sped my D2 up considerably and cleared up some issues as per what you mentioned above!.

  • Just one more thing about the Topo v6 maps, remember that you will be losing the popularity routing functions that are in the Topo Active maps. This was the main reason why I reverted back to the Topo Active over the v6 even though the v6 had more waypoints. The number of times I found a useful track listed on Topo Active with those little red dashes is actually quite surprising. Switching back to the full v6 and I was walking through a green area with no trails. But it was there all right!

  • Instead of using/purchasing the Topo maps you could also go free...

Maps are more often detailed than those you purchase.
