Why GPS in 5 plus is SO bad (SOLVED)

Especially on small circles like 200m track. Look on the image! Actually, it is the worst image I ever seen on Strava! Compare my new 5 plus (on the top) and iPhone (bottom). Even cheapest Android costs 10x less than Fenix has much better GPS performance. Even my old Vivocative HR had MUCH better tracks. Now I shame to publish my runs from my 700 euro device, they look just terrible. I can't understand how Garmin was able to make a product with SO bad performance of its MAJOR feature.

Fenix 5 Plus vs. iPhone X GPS Performance

  • Wow, this is really interesting. I'll definitely try.

Worth to mention that I discovered that some laps looks better than others; exactly in same run, same time, same location, same pace - basically, same everything. Compare 4th kilometers vs. 7th kilometers. That is hard to explain.

  • спасибо за наводку! не собо удобно конечно, но у меня тоже трек кривой если носить часы в традиционном  месте)

  • по мне так - одинаково) где бегаете?

  • Бегаю везде, где бываю, чаще в Екатеринбурге и Москве Slight smile

  • просто хотел узнать - где GPS так глючит, это в Москве?

  • Нет, все скрины выше из Еката. Сегодня в Москве сбегаю по стадиону 400м., посмотрим...

  • I fully understand your hope. I think a general petition "please fix your software" would make sense, but I am not sure it would change anything. Only thing (if at all) that would change Garmins strategy would be to lower their sales. As long as sales are good, they don't care about happy customers.

Still, write to Garmin support. I don't think they read too much in the forums here.

I have the same one. I put my old 735 in the pocket and they showed me better track. And the same in open water swim also. Old 735 - better..

I’ve tested all modes and setting, and every time - bad.

  • I checked out 400m track in Moscow and should admit that it looks pretty nice, no complains.
Based on my Parkrun experiences, sharp turns seem not a problem as well.
Problematic tracks are under the open sky with no tall buildings around, so they don't cause a problem.
So I can conclude the core problem is in quick and often changes in running direction.

  • A good track in the photo, but there the place seems to be open without problems with the GPS signal
