Course Navigation - No Waypoints?

Former Member

This should hopefully be a simple issue to solve, but when loading a GC created course on the 5+, I'm not seeing any of the waypoint data that was added to the route within GC. This obviously makes it a little hard to navigate to camp sites and water sources along the way.

Am I missing an obvious setting that I haven't been able to find in the docs, or is the way simply unable to render the waypoint data?

Joel - as a thought - try creating a route on Plotaroute as TCX file with waypoints, and add that via Garmin Express on a computer - does that work.

I vaguely remember it's something to do with using TCX files...

Cheers for the advice. I'll attempt that in a few hours and report my experiences.

the other thought is perhaps try Garmin Basecamp... let me know how you get on as I have an ultra soon and reading this made me realise I hadn’t added cp’s to the route....

Joel, I’ll play around tomorrow as well as I got it working once before. Think if I remember correctly https://www.plotaroute.com/tip/1/how-to-download-a-route-to-a-garmin-edge helped. Also check you have I believe it’s Use Map under activity routing options

Yeah in the day tomorrow I’ll play around as I have a course already plotted in Plotaroute with CP’s. hopefully one of us will crack this!

I've realised that I've made a mistake in the terminology, confusing course-points with way-points. The course created within GC had a number of water and camp locations that were defined as course points, and these were what was failing to display on the 5+'s map.

I've been able to import the course into Garmin Explore and add the waypoints which are now displaying on the watch - effectively satisfying my requirement. The process is a little convoluted, but it does work.

Create course in GC -> Sync to watch -> Sync watch Garmin Explore -> Add waypoints in Garmin Explore -> Sync Garmin Explore to watch

I'll leaving the deep-diving of the watches failure to display the GC created course points for another day.

I also found out using https://eur.inreach.garmin.com/ and the Garmin Explore app did the same! I wondered about your terminology - but hey if it works!

Nice. Now if we could only add waypoints via GC.

Yeah - there's defintely a feature request there - will look how to do that tonight

  • Create course in GC -> Sync to watch -> Sync watch Garmin Explore -> Add waypoints in Garmin Explore -> Sync Garmin Explore to watch

Why not just: Create course in GE with waypoints -> Sync GE & watch.
GE has better maps, GC uses Google maps. It seems that course creation in GC is just a marketing feature, no actual use. Or am I missing some usage scenario?
