Fenix 5s Plus and HRM Run amongst other issues :-(

I've recently upgraded from what was an excellent 235 to a new Fenix 5s Plus together with a new HRM Run strap, which I am beginning to regret.

I have read some time ago that there were issues with Running Dynamics and the Fenix watches however I had hoped these would now be fixed. Is anyone out there successfully using HRM Run with a Fenix 5s Plus watch? I don't know if it's still an issue with the software or something faulty on my side equipment.

Some issues I am finding:

- HRM Run is not immediately recognized as an external HR monitor (unlike my 235 and HR strap which was quick to connect and stable once connected)

- Running dynamics e.g. power are displayed intermittently on some screens whilst I am running

- The screen display seems to randomly alternate between white and black

- Running dynamics are not all completely shown in Garmin Connect after you've finished a run / no power is shown in Strava (perhaps I need to pay extra for that though?!)

(Never mind the battery life when I am not using the watch and it's just sat on my desk!!)

Sorry for the rant, if anyone has any positive stories about the watch and this combination it would be great to hear them and where I am going wrong!!

  • Hi, thank you, yes that's the one! I don't think I've done anything special with it...just downloaded and was expecting it to work, which it does but only when I am running:-)

Is there anywhere that I need to explicitly give permission to write to this file or any other settings to consider?

  • I don't have the separate RD pod, just the chest strap (HRM-Run)

  • I don't think you need to give permission. I don't even think you can give or deny permissions when installing a datafield - I can't remember ever being asked about that for any field.

So writing to the .fit file ought to work.

  • So I did a bit more digging and found this article -

    https://support.garmin.com/en-HK/?faq=Ws0lcscepH4FluJp1Oynq7

When I checked Garmin Connect the write power data was checked for running power but not for lap running power - maybe that is it??!! I have checked it, re-sync'd and will do a test on tomorrow mornings run! It appears that data is being logged else.

  • Yay I have running power now displayed in Garmin Connect! The lap power checkbox did it!

Still nothing showing in Strava however as somebody said that isn't a Garmin issue.

In Garmin Connect under performance stats I don't see anything for power curve or functional threshold power, maybe these aren't to do with this power data field or something else (apologies for my ignorance here if so).

Thanks for your help everyone :-)

  • You will not see power data integrated in any way. Garmin do not know or accept the concept of running power. Their data field is just a bolt-on, which you can't integrate in structured workouts or performance stats.

(And before you ask: Buying a Stryd will not change that a lot. Garmin watches have no native support for external running power meters either. But with a Stryd, you will have access to some workarounds to parts of the problem.)

  • make sure that you have this set to record data to the fit file.

    1. select the data field you are using and click "settings"

    2. verify that write power data to file is enabled

    3. make sure to add the data field to your activities.
