Fenix 5s Plus and HRM Run amongst other issues :-(

I've recently upgraded from what was an excellent 235 to a new Fenix 5s Plus together with a new HRM Run strap, which I am beginning to regret.

I have read some time ago that there were issues with Running Dynamics and the Fenix watches however I had hoped these would now be fixed. Is anyone out there successfully using HRM Run with a Fenix 5s Plus watch? I don't know if it's still an issue with the software or something faulty on my side equipment.

Some issues I am finding:

- HRM Run is not immediately recognized as an external HR monitor (unlike my 235 and HR strap which was quick to connect and stable once connected)

- Running dynamics e.g. power are displayed intermittently on some screens whilst I am running

- The screen display seems to randomly alternate between white and black

- Running dynamics are not all completely shown in Garmin Connect after you've finished a run / no power is shown in Strava (perhaps I need to pay extra for that though?!)

(Never mind the battery life when I am not using the watch and it's just sat on my desk!!)

Sorry for the rant, if anyone has any positive stories about the watch and this combination it would be great to hear them and where I am going wrong!!

  • No problem with HRM-Run

    - The screen display seems to randomly alternate between white and black

This one is likely because you have 'Climb Pro' or 'Auto Climb' selected so the screens change to show you when you are climbing.

Running dynamics e.g. power are displayed intermittently on some screens whilst I am running

Again, you've probably got something set that changes the display - possibly an alert/interval range. Perhaps even autoscroll.

Metrics not showing in Strava is a Strava issue, not Garmin.

  • I've used my F5+ together with the HRM-Run for a little more than a year now, and the connection is always super quick and rock solid. I have never had any issues with dropouts or missing Running Dynamics. (not using the additional Garmin CIQ Running Power though).

Only one single time have I experienced that the strap failed to connect, but a simple hard reboot of the watch fixed that instantly.

Regarding what could appear to be random screen changes you should try what philipshambrook suggested: Disable AutoClimb and AutoScroll. I believe those two settings are specific for each activity type, i.e. if you are using both Run and Trail Run you would need to change the settings in both.

  • Many thanks, I'll check that setting and see what is set.

  • Thanks for the feedback, good to hear it is working, I will persevere!

Exact same observation here. Connection was/is always rock solid with F5+ and HRM-Run, just had it once where the strap didn't want to connect and I had to remove it from the list of "known devices", hard reset the watch and re-pair it. Since then never had any issues with that.

  • Hi,

Turning off the auto climb and scrolling seems to have corrected the display issues and I could see power data for all of today’s run which was great - thank you for the help.

Although I can see power data on my watch during a run it doesn’t seem to be shown in Garmin Connect for me afterwards when I save a run. Is this the same with you guys, do I need to enable anything in Garmin Connect? I can otherwise see other running dynamic data eg cadence, GC time balance etc

    Cheers,

    David

I'm going to be pedantic here and say there never was an issue with the display. The issue was you not understanding how the watch worked.

Although I can see power data on my watch during a run it doesn’t seem to be shown in Garmin Connect for me afterwards when I save a run

Where's your running power coming from?

  • I'm using a HRM-Run chest strap so am expecting between that and my watch to compute running power and it be saved/available both during the run and afterwards for analysis. At the moment I can only see it on my watch when I am actually running.

  • Is this the data field you are using to show power?

    https://apps.garmin.com/en-CA/apps/741afa11-0250-48e2-86b5-14bd47e29391#0

If yes, congratulations. You may be the very first person to actually use that field.

I can see in the description that it needs permission to write information to the .fit file, so it would seem that Garmin's intention is that power should be recorded.

  • I use it, it works, and it writes power data to the fit-file. (using an RD-pod) I also forces the watch into 1 sec recording.
I can't say anything about the quality of the power calculation though, as I have nothing to compare with..
