Not displaying topo 1:50 UK map

Hi after the latest update to my fenix 5 plus the active pro topo 1:50 UK map is not displaying, just the basic topo map. Tried what garmin support asked me to try no luck still the Same. Reset the watch, installed the map again still no luck, just do not know what else to do. Also have a garmin erred 30 and bought the topo 1:50 UK map also and downloaded to the GPS via garmin express, just wondering if this could have an effect with the map for the watch? Any help please.
  • Can't see how buying the map for your Etrex would affect the map on your Fenix. If what Garmin support told you didn't work I suggest you call them again.
  • I don't know if this is related but I had issues trying to use just the regular Topo Active North East Europe after upgrading maps (succesfully through first updated Garmin Express on macOS) to 2018.20 and the watch (Fenix 5 Plus Sapphire) to latest firmware 7.10 (first to 7.00 through Garmin Express and after Garmin released it, to 7.10 through watch notification).
I have not experienced such issues before using firmwares < 7.x or earlier version of the Topo Active maps, which had navigation and every zoom level working right out of the box, and since 7.10 was clearly a hotfix aimed for mapping functionality, it may be firmware related.

First thing I tried after upgrade, was just a Garmin Connect route for a run exercise and the watch just crashed immediately when I tried to navigate that, took a long time loading maps on reboot (again), did not show anything in the map view for the 1h55m I ran. There was also empty maps when I tried view past exercises.

For hours I tried many things like rebooting the watch number of times, letting it load on the map view (yes the Topo Active map was toggled on in the settings), navigating a route (for 10mins with no success), using different detail level, zoom levels, reinstalling the Topo Active Europe maps, rebooting again and again, but no Topo Active map data would show (not at least in the middle zoom levels) and the watch just hanged on navigation (even to a POIs 500m or 200m away) or showed there are no routes when trying a roundtrip route. I even wrote two long posts to this forum in frustration (but never sent them).

Finally, I gave Garmin Base Gamp a try. First attempt to load the new maps with it took 2,5hrs and it hang with no success in the watch either but for the second one I left it to load for a whole day and finally after two reboots the navigation feature was working again in the watch. I don't know if that loading on Garmin's Base Gamp actually does some processing that is not yet done during the half an hour installation of the map in Garmin Express and booting of the watch, but for me it helped.

    Hi There

Using Fenix 5X Plus 7.10, I'm having the same trouble. It didn't quite start in the UK, I was in France when the issue appeared first. I'd have details at low scale (50m) but then blank screen above... I could live with that.

I'm now in Scotland and have nothing from 8m or above... I just does not load the map, a nightmare!

TommiR, any chance you could explain your fix with the Base Camp? did you load a planned route?

Thanks for your help, this is extremely frustrating!!

    Cheers

Just to clarify, I don't have the Topo Pro maps, just the reqular Topo Active for Europe.

Unfortunately also, I don't have deeper knowledge of the mapping feature or what exactly the Base Gamp did/did not do, but just like before (with the original maps) it did take a while to load them on Base Gamp, it now loaded the upgraded maps. And as mentioned, I tried a lot of things and am not sure how much the Base Gamp contributed to a solution.
I didn't plan any routes on Base Gamp, just browsed the maps there and most importantly let it to fully load them.
Perhaps, Garmin has some help resources for matter.

So I basically just plugged the watch to my Mac via USB, opened up the Garmin Baae Gamp and it started loading the maps on it automatically (it shows blue progress bar on them in the upper left corner under the device header as it loads). It will load the maps in parallell so the more you have them, the more time it will take. For me it took few hours to complete for the basic Topo Active Europe maps. After that they were browsable on Base Gamp (with a bit of patience as it will always require).

Then after it was fully completed, I plugged the watch off, did two restarts and went to navigate to some POIs (near, then 5km away etc.) on the watch and that worked and the loading of maps also got faster.

Still, at least for me, this new firmware does not seem to show the TopoActive maps in details with a zoom mode having no more than 300m reading in the scale. Maybe this is an intended performance enhancement or something but previously it did it further as far as I remember.
  • Just to correct the use of the term loading so others aren't confused. BaseCamp does not load maps from a device. What it does is index them so it can display them. You will always need the device connected in that scenario.
  • Hi contacted garmin again they could not understand why the map would not display as it does display in base camp sent them photos of the watch and of base camp with the map displayed also of the garmin folder now waiting for a reply will keep you informed.
  • Hi just an update garmin emailed me to say they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix but no time frame has been set yet and will contact me when they have the fix. I have installed the talky toaster free map to the watch as I was hoping to get some sort of detailed map but the Same thing is happening just displaying the topo active 2018.20 map, so I will just have to wait and see what happens seems I have wasted £150 on a map that I cannot use.
  • I'm having the same issue. Hopefully the solution will not be too long in coming. It's a lot of money to spend on maps not be able to use them. What email address did you contact Garmin on?
  • This may or may not be relevant but most Garmin devices are limited to the amount of map tiles they can handle. Each map consists of numerous tiles and it's not easy to determine how many, but if you do exceed the allowed number maps will fail to display. In this case the solution is to remove one or more maps.
  • It used to work before the update though.

The only way to remove maps would be to go into the files on a computer though. You don't seem to be able to remove them on Garmin Connect.
