2018.20 Australia & NZ Map Update Fail

Two weeks ago I had an issue updating the maps for my new Fenix 5X Plus, contacted support and was told that Garmin Express wasn't compatible with a 4G wifi connection and so they couldn't help me. I have since upgraded my connection and have successfully downloaded the 2018.20 topoActive maps, however on install I am getting the error "There was an error installing the update."

Not only that, but the original maps that were on the device have now been replaced with the most basic map that only shows major roads and no contours. I now understand that a backup of all files on the watch would have been advisable before an update is carried out, something which I would have thought would automatically be done before an update by Garmin Express.

I have contacted support again and they offered me a refund. I told them that I bought the watch because I want to use it, not to get a refund. After 1.5hrs on the phone I have now lost all of my user settings/history after completing the requested factory reset.

I have now sent all files to Garmin Support minus map files in hope that they can sort something out - when is another question. I have never had an issue like this before and I have owned 3 other Garmin devices in the past 10 years. I use the watch for my business reviewing and writing up hiking trail guides in Australia, I need it sorted asap.

Garmin Express is now stuck in the install mode for this map and won't let me download it from scratch, much like the other maps already on the device - I have deleted the other maps files, and they re-download and re-install without an issue when I select Map Options -> Reinstall Map. I need to have this option for the 2018.20 A&NZ Map, or a download link for the file which support say is not possible.
  • Sorry about the delay on updating this thread, we are currently working on a fix for this and planning on releasing the fix as soon as we can. I plan on updating this thread as soon as the fix is in place and provide any extra information if needed. Thank all of you that contacted Garmin’s Support Teams and provided the extra data that lead to us being able to correct this.

Don't forget to fix Fenix 5 plus as well https://forums.garmin.com/forum/on-the-trail/wrist-worn/fenix-5-5s-plus/1461620-2018-20-australia-nz-map-update-fail
  • Tyler Thank you for the reminder. The same thing is causing the same issue.

Volker_I. Different thing but we are looking into that too. Since my German should not be anywhere someone can see/hear it, can you pass on for me that we are looking into the issue but we need them to contact support to allow us to know they are having that issue and to provide us with some files so that we make sure we get it fix on the first try?
  • Volker_I. That email address goes to the team that always working on Beta Software. Let's let them focus on the beta software and issues that are found with that.

In your case, since it is the German forums, I would suggest they contact the German Product Support team directly (Information at the bottom). Anyone outside of that, I would suggest looking up your local team too. That way there is no language barriers (or failed transactions issues). If you are not worried about that, feel free to reach out to the US Product Support team.
  • Here is the workaround from Garmin which worked for me on Fenix 5 Plus and I have also installed the latest beta 6.58:
    • Plug the device into the computer
    • Open the Garmin Drive
    • Open the Garmin Folder
    • Open the XML files (This will need to be done an editing tool like Notepad or Notepad +-+)
    • Press CTRL-F
    • Search for 006-D7727-00
    • Replace the part number with 006-D7250-03
    • Save the XML file
    • Run Express

I just followed those steps and looks like it works my watch is busy updating - Note that I'm not on the latest beta still on 6.12.0.0
Still disappointed with Garmin for not being able to fix t his and taking so long to figure out a workaround.
  • Are all NZ watches APAC or RoW? I note Express hasnt tried to update me to 6.58. Im on mac so my garmin doesnt load a drive (can ssee files if i trsansfer them with a tool) , did you run this workaround on a windows device or Mac?

msiladi Yes I'm on windows machine, From my side Express hasn't tried to update to 6.58 I think you have to find and download it if you want to try the beta version. I didn't bother and didn't seem to matter because I was still able to update the maps following the steps above using current release version 6.12.0.0

I've also got a Mac and have been using that too, I'll see if I can see the files on the device and if I can I'll let you know what I did
  • dghillza thanks very much for the feedback. Looks at least as if Garmin is getting closer to permanent fix. Sort of. Now if i can get base camp to work......

msiladi I've had no such luck with getting to the files on a mac - I thought changing the connection mode on the watch might make the difference but it didn't. Having looked around the forums it seems the only way around it to do download some Android file transfer App.

Personally, I wouldn't be keen to do that and would rather try to get hold of a windows machine.
Hopefully, Garmin is close to a fix and will get it out soon for everyone

Legend! This worked for me, except I noticed the map version has since updated to 006-D7250-04.
