Horrible GPS accuracy when walking, anyone has the same problem?

The GPS track when walking is so bad and zigzaggy that I am literally ashamed other people see it. On a 850USD device.

I am using the 5X+ with the latest 6.0 official firmware, I have restarted the watch, tried smart and one second GPS recording and all three modes, GPS, +Glonass and +Galileo. All to no avail.

The track produced looks ridiculous regardless of whether I walk in the forest, in the woods or open fields with no obstructions.

Please note one that I walked with my daughter who has a 735XT, as well as some friends with Amazfot Stratos, and both don’t exhibit these problems, just like my Fenix 3 did not. When I increase speed, like riding a bike the problem disappears.

Garmin could you you please fix this ridiculousness? Or is my device faulty? ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444373.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444374.png ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444375.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444376.jpg ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1444377.jpg
  • I noticed too, compared to my Suunto 9 Baro
GPS + GLONASS in both are really different
S9 was amazing, but F5x+ is good enough for my needs
  • User are all aware of this unacceptable issue and we reported it in the following post but Garmin is deaf about this big problem. Nothing has been for most than 6 months about it. Probably an hardware issue since they changed their GPS chip provider. I don't understand how a class action has not been raised in the US.

  • It is quite obvious that it’s high sensitivity causing this. But they should be able to do some simple smoothing if your speed is below some threshold. Fortunately, you do get your position and on a bike, maybe even running it is substantially better. But these fuzzy, zigzaggy drunken tracks are not what a top of the line device should produce. That is why I am wondering if there are people who don’t see this, as I would gladly have my unit replaced for a sober one ;).
  • That's so funny... and I'm sorry that It's a negative post that will not bring you good news.

It's the same issue I had and still have with Fenix 3 HR and it's had it's fair share of updates and that issue cannot be fixed in software... and it's been passed on from the original Fenix 3.

It's about the antenna design that it's not a good one... the funny thing even if it did NOT work in the Fenix 3 (there was a huge thread with tons of complains) they considered that it's good enough that they build Fenix 3 HR on that... then Fenix 5... and I guess Fenix 5 plus (I am not sure but looking at this post It looks like it)

A simple test would confirm that... try to walk with the watch face the sky the whole time... and then take the same route with the watch on your hand... I'll bet you will see a difference for the better whent he watch screen is up looking at the sky :) .
  • dmalovic I think it does vary between devices my 5+ seems generally OK - haven't used for Hiking but for Kayaking it shows a reasonable track (and I kayak slowly :) ) For running it is generally OK but not as good as my 935. Waiting for warmer weather to see how it performs for open water swims.

I use my 5X+ for both kayaking and walking. During kayaking the tracking and velocity measurement is of much better quality. I walk and kayak at roughly the same velocity, so the difference is not due to faster kayaking velocity.

The reason is probably that during kayaking I am on open water, with no buildings to reflect the GPS signals, and with a clear sight to all satellites on the horizon.
  • AllanOlesen67 the open aspect may be a factor - but many of my runs are in tree cover and usually the GPS track is OK - dmalovic seems to be saying that his wobbles are speed related as the tracks for running are OK but for walking they are not

That was why I was comparing kayaking to walking, not to running.
  • Hi everyone, I've had my Fenix for about four weeks now and yesterday I went for my first walk with it. The running activities are recorded very well also a bit restless but still normal. When walking it was something else. There it was very restless but I still think it's okay.

Yeap, it's like my Fenix 3 HR.... and it's sad to be honest. I am still waiting for a good replacement for my watch and apparently 2 generations have passed and the GPS tracking is still the same low quality. I miss the old days when I had the 910xt that had just a simple GPS (NO Glonass or Galileo) and had WAY WAY WAAAAYYY BETTER tracking.

Since the Fenix 3 with their new antena/chipset implementation, these watches show better tracking if you walk/run in open space, no high buildings around, not a lot of trees, no obstacles of any sort... for instance if you walk in the desert you'll be amazed on the great tracking, ... but if you walk in the city it's really really bad...

I am genuinely want to upgrade but this is such a turn off.

Well, not everyone is picky like me... I guess the overwhelming majority does not care about tracking as long as the distance measured is good so it looks like Garmin will not do anything about it.
