Fenix 5x Plus - 6.51 Beta Release

Hello Fenix 5x Plus users,

We have new beta software ready for your upcoming adventures!

Fenix 5X Plus: https://www8.garmin.com/support/down...s.jsp?id=14335

Note: Please allow for the updates to propagate across all servers. There is no need to post that the link does not work. It will after a bit of patience.

6.51 Change Log Notes:
  • Fixed an issue where the device was reporting extremely high values for Bike powermeter.

Please note, the beta updates released on these forums are not suitable for APAC region devices.

Please send all bug reports to "][email protected], and indicate which model of the fenix 5 Plus series you have in the subject line.
  • please - it has now been almost 6 weeks since you created this beta to fix ONE single bug.

What is more important: They did not add any new errors in that beta.

I actually think this is the first time I have seen a new version (including the official versions!) for the F5X+ which both solved one of my problems and didn't add any new problems.

Based on that, 6.51 is the most stable version I have ever seen for the F5X+, and it is ironic that it is a beta.

    Dear Garmin,

please - it has now been almost 6 weeks since you created this beta to fix ONE single bug.

So we are quite a few APAC users who are stuck on v5.1 waiting for 6.51 to release so we can upgrade from 5.1 and use our power meters. If we upgrade to v6.00 we will get power spikes on Bikes and Stryd and other power meters.

So please - it should not be this hard to funnel the release of a "beta" with ONE SINGLE bugfix/update.

I'm honestly surprised it has not rolled out within a short beta time (2 weeks) as it is only a bugfix and not a feature enhancement.

Please again from a very disappointed Garmin APAC device owner.

    ...actually...TWO bugs.
    - power meter
    - Varia radar icon (which disappeared in beta 5.x, official 6.0, and is back in beta 6.51)

and yes I feel it is stable.

just to give the development team all the credit they deserve.

    robert

  • To add onto the last comment, I’ve also found it a bit “snappier” when rotating through the screens but the battery life has also improved. Without running activities (on 6.00), I was getting roughly .250 drain per hour. With the beta installed, it’s now .141.

Very happy with the battery life thus far.
  • One thing that I’ve noticed with this beta, while the battery life is much better, I’ve noticed that my watch to phone connection drops A LOT more. So much, that I decided to roll back the version to 6.00 where my connection is near perfect.

It's real awkward how Garmin dares to postpone a new FW while major bug with 6.0 software & wattmeters is well known. No kudos to Garmin. You apparently dont respect your customers.
  • Garmin has no respect that is very clear.

I hope the delay is due to Garmin rethinking their overall software distribution strategy so us with APAC watches wont have to wait months and months to get BIG bug fixed.

There are so many Gray import watches in all of EU which are not even listed as APAC units. Often sold on “country” specific websites (like .co.uk for UK) - but with no description of the watch not having EU maps.

To be honest - Garmin should have same firmware on all watches - and a way to select your software build. So if you want Thai language - you can download a special Thai software build. I know there is probably not enough memory to support every single language “in ROM” in every watch. But there have to be another way of handling software distribution and bug fixes - so serious issues like the power meter one gets shipped to everybody FAST.

And it can’t really be the price or license cost of the maps that are “keeping” Garmin from having a single product across the world. Most of the maps now are not even Garmin constructed maps but created from the Open maps.

But if Garmin would just come out in public and say “We know we screwed up and are working on it” - it would help. But the total silence is just not good karma.

Beta 6.51 - ONE bug fix or TWO - now in “beta” for 2 months. I think that is a new record.

But on the positive side I have not used or appreciated my Apple Watch 3 as much as in the last 2 months. But the idiot I was I convinced my brother and sister to go Garmin so to compete with them I’m stuck on Garmin at least until we all “upgrade” to a different brand. But that is the only thing holding me back now.
  • IMO where Garmin needs improvement, is the communication from company to consumer, not necessarily the effort to improve their products. Being a “Garmin” forum, there should be a bit more communication and/or a roadmap with a generalized idea of upcoming improvements/fixes. They could even create a “Sticky Thread” where only Garmin employees can post.

Back in March of ‘18, I participated in a Kickstarter project for an ABC watch by Alpina (called AlpinerX). The biggest thing that stood out to me was how open they were to feature suggestions/improvements and how their communication was both in and out of the Kickstarter platform. As a consumer, I very much appreciated that.

This wouldn’t solve all the complaints (you can’t make everyone happy) but part of the complaints against Garmin is their lack of communication...which quite frankly is self inflicted.
