Same hill 4x - different elevation tracings in Connect

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3163019628

Is there a setting I should change?

Thank you!

  • Sorry about that. It's public now.
  • The issue is with the last one right? Sometimes these things happen. Do the run again and see if it repeats itself. Overall it doesn't look too bad. Did you calibrate the altimeter before you started?

Though each run was up the same hill, and so of course the peak elevations should have been identical, it looked like I ran up four different hills, each somewhat smaller than the previous ... I thought it looked pretty bad myself!

I didn't calibrate the altimeter though, I thought I had read something a few months ago saying I didn't need to. Thanks for pointing me there, I'll re-read again … it was definitely overwhelming setting things up when the watch was new, maybe I'll get more out of it this time around.

    Thanks, philipshambrook!
  • To me, it looks bad. I have a 20 meter high hill I walk up and down repeatedly. Both my F3 and F5X+ has been within +/- 1 meter of ascent on every ... erhh ... ascent during a session.

I wonder if your experience was the result of some auto calibration of the altimeter taking place during the event. The 5 Plus series are supposed to do that, as opposed to earlier watches, and I have been worried that they would use some brain-dead algorithm for it. But so far it has worked okay on my watch.
  • My first outing with the 5S+ had elevation issues - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/3136439590. I calibrated the barometer and altimeter and it's been fine since. Perhaps it needs that initial calibration before first use ?
  • I have calibrated the altimeter, will do the barometer as well. I've been traveling enough that I haven't done sprints on those hills again … looking to repeating them there in the new year, and will report back. Thank you very much for your suggestions!
