Training Status

So I get recovery time and also training load, but it tells me I have to run twice outside for at least twenty minutes with heartrate to get training status. I have done this loads, average of four runs a week for over a month, but only use the wrist based heart rate, does it only work with a chest strap? In the manual it doesn't mention this.
  • From what I understand and have observed, the watch looks for changes in your running VO2 Max to determine your training status. You should be able to obtain this using just the wrist based heart rate provided it is giving accurate results (i.e. no cadence lock). Make sure your max heart rate is set correctly (via Garmin Connect) and try to run somewhere relatively flat to get an accurate VO2 Max. Mine regularly updates using just the wrist heart rate. Hope that helps...

Make sure the activity type is Run. I don't think it calculates VO2 max in Trail Run.
  • I think thatst the problem I always run trails so use trail run...

So if i am not a runner, i will never see a trainig status on this watch?
  • Incorrect. If you are a cyclist you will get Training Status.

But not with MTB i guess?
  • you need a power meter of some kind to get a cycling VO2Max. The watch needs to know your fitness level in order to determine training status. This comes in the form of either running VO2Max, cycling VO2Max, or both.

I used Run instead of Trail Run in the foothills today and my training status appeared immediately after the activity. I'm not sure if that's smart because the hills might negatively affect your Vo2 max estimate, but nothing really changed for me; Vo2 max, training load, recovery, and race prediction are all the same. The only difference is now my watch says "maintaining" instead of "no status." Meh. :)

I'll give it a go next time then!
