Fenix 5s+ Power Dropouts

I did an indoor cycling session yesterday. I used my garmin edge 520 and the new Garmin Fenix 5S Plus.

Please have a look at data of the Fenix 5s Plus. Power and cadence have so many dropouts, while my edge 520 was much better. The end results are quite different.

I noticed the dropouts happening whenever I remove my hands from the handlebar. The power meter is Quarq Dfour and the connection is ANT+.

Please advice if this is a watch connectivity problem?

  • hi aalabbas, sorry to hear about the dropouts
...did you wear the watch on your right wrist
...was there a free line af sight between the 5S+ and the Dfour
...was your 5S+ connected to your phone
...was the dfour connected via bluetooth with another device
...would you mind uploading the fit file here in the forum
    ...

    Hi OnlyTwo

    1. Left wrist
    2. Yes
    3. At the end of the workout, the edge was connected to my phone
    4. No
    5. I couldn't upload it due to size limitation. Please see weblink (https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/2942783488)
  • thank you for the feedback and link
my ant+ experience with the not plus F5 was better when worn on the right wrist
...needed the fit file to look inside at the sensor logging with FitFileRepairTool
...also for the battery voltage of the DFour(when registered in the fit file)

I compressed the fit file, please find attached
  • sorry, but the FitFileRepairTool does not see any sensor sources in your fit file
do you have the original fit file instead of the Garmin Connect download ? ( can not comment on ant+ drops)

How do I locate the original fit file?

...DFour ant+ signal at start of the ride was 50% and at the end of the ride 35% (not good at all)

Is this a DFour or Garmin issue?

Thanks, will update the DFour and see how it goes. I updated the F5S+ today.
  • yup, see how it goes after the firmware updates ;)

Updated the Quarq Dfour and did a 45 min cycling recovery workout. The dropouts are still there on F5S+, while Edge 520 is totally fine. This time it includes dropouts in HR as well. All in ANT+.

  • sorry to hear that
look for the original fit files on your watch in the GARMIN/ACTIVIY folder, please upload together with the one from your edge
or have a look at the files by the previous provided link

did you wear the watch on your right wrist
you an also connect the DFour by BLE to the watch instead of ANT+

    F5S+ original fit file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/4nk49jiowxlkvi4/F5s%2B%202018-08-19-17-21-49%5B1%5D.fit?dl=0
Edge 520 original fit file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/vkn5pjioewwus16/Edge%202018-08-19-17-21-54.fit?dl=0

I wore it on my left wrist to to see if the problem was with the Quarq powermeter. Will try the BLE tomorrow.

The current version on the watch is 4.2

  • the ANT+ reception from the DFour at the end of the ride is 37% while on the edge it is 89%
reception in your edge for the tacx is also around 88%

you can use the previous provided link and upload your files there to check ant+ signal at start and end of the workout
...just search for "quarq" and then look for the line with "unknown9="...the value is the ant+ signal procentage

just checked another F5S+ fit file and FitFileRepairTool could see sensor sources in that file
why FFRT can not see sensor sources in your files is a mistery ;) for me

would strongly recommend doing a full reset of your F5S+

Thanks a lot for your help. I did a workout today wearing the F5s+ on my right hand. I would like to confirm that the dropouts were very minimal. I will continue doing this tomorrow.
