Windows 10 not recognising watch via USB all of a sudden!

Hi folks

Windows 10 (on 2 different laptops) stopped recognising the F5X+ as a USB device all of a sudden. I get the dreaded "USB device not recognised" error on both machines.

Watch running original/stable firmware. Latest version of Express. Have tried in Garmin & MTP modes. Windows errors on connecting the watch as per above. Express does not see the watch at all.

Have tried every single troubleshooting step on these forums & from Garmin's support pages. Nothing works. Only thing I haven't done is factory reset the watch for obvious reasons.

When I go into Device Manager in Windows, there is an error next to one of the USB devices (device mlafunctioned). As soon as I unplug the watch, the USB device with the error disappears.

USB mode was working fine last week. I have not changed anything on the watch or the PC in that time.

Any ideas or is anyone else having this issue?
  • When in Device Manager, uninstall the USB Drivers on the one with the error. Unplug and plug your device back into the computer. The Windows machine should reload the USB drivers for the device. If that doesn’t work, please contact Garmin Product Support.

I'm having the same problem with my Approach watch. I've tried all of the fixes mentioned online but still no joy. Also, having tried the factory reset I've now got no courses at all on my watch.

I've tried connecting to four computers Windows 10 64 bit and 32 bit + an old XP machine but always get the same message Insert a disc in USB drive x.

It appears that this was a problem a few years ago when Microsoft did an update to W10. At the time Garmin put a fix in Express to get around the problem. Is it possible that that either the fix has been removed or that it needs tweaking.

Has anyone out there got a solution to this?

I meant to add that when you look under the covers via Device Manager you can see an event message for the device. This suggests that it knows that it's a Garmin device at least.

    The event message is:

Device USBSTOR\Disk&Ven_Garmin&Prod_S2_Flash&Rev_1.00\0000e9f8cdac&0 was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match
  • When in Device Manager, uninstall the USB Drivers on the one with the error. Unplug and plug your device back into the computer. The Windows machine should reload the USB drivers for the device. If that doesn’t work, please contact Garmin Product Support.

Did this fix the problem? I'm having the same issue, but my Garmin does not even show up as a device in Device Manager. Is this possibly due to a Windows update issue?

I ran across this same issue today. The fenix would show in This PC and then constantly disconnect and reconnect. Win10 x64.

I used my Windwos 7 machine and it went fine.
  • Seeing the same thing here all of a sudden. Must have happened in the last couple Insider updates. Device shows as Garmin USB GPS. Cannot get it to appear as a drive anymore.
  • MTP devices like a plus don't show with drive letters under windows, at least win10. That's normal.

I have used several devices in MTP mode on W10 without issue. And the Fenix 5 has worked since I bought it on W10. Now it doesn't get recognized whether I use Mass Storage mode or Garmin mode (whatever that is).

The Garmin unit is displayed as a portable device in file manager. In properties/events it has this line " Device USB\ requires further installation"

Could this be a problem ?

  • Happen to me before, i was charging Fenix 5x with powerbank during race. Went back home connect to laptop out of sudden USB not recognize.
I thought USB cable having problem, go back to service center to get replacement. But support guy try on their pc no issue. Try again with my laptop work fine. WTF.
