GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
  • DC Rainmakder is working for Garmin. He said he has particpates to the making of the Fenix 5x series, so I cannot trust him now. In the first review, his GPS traces were perfect. He made them in Paris near the same area where I am living and I had a lot of problem. His traces were perfect even with GPS FW version 2.10. I bought mine watch (Titanium version 1249 Euros) and I think also I am very very stupid !!

I think the beter way before buying is kind of watch is never trust Youtubers and so on... They are not always fair, even if There are maybe fair ones.
  • Hi Falconeye75,
If I wanted to see or read where he said that, where would I look? Thanks
  • Hi Jim,

You can find his review here, also read people commentary and his answer. You have also videos on Youtube. I ma sure there are others articles but I don't have them for now. As you van see at Paris Luxembourg, he has no issues with its GPS (no Drunk man syndrom and no "loops")

  • Thanks. I’ve read that review from before and now read through DCR’s posts and replies only (skipped posts from others) and I couldn’t find it where he states he is working for them. Receiving loaner devices for making reviews, having contact with Garmin for Q&A, and maybe giving feedback on their devices is the only things I found and I would not say that is “working for them” nor suggest biased false reviews.
  • First, DCR does by far the most detailed review (in a post) out of anyone that I’ve seen. Most other websites, take the same information and just re-write it to fit their “blog” to get views but provide little to no new information.

If you actually read the reviews he does, he is critical of Garmin in certain areas. When he did his review of the Instinct, he got on Garmin because they didn’t include CIQ for the Instinct. He does this with other features, with other watches and products. I strongly doubt that he is an employee of Garmin, as he would provide no criticism whatsoever. Also, some of the problems people report, are related to user error and not the product itself.

Like him or not, he does a pretty good job at reviewing products.
  • DCR is no Garmin employee, but he is deeply involved in many beta testing of a lot of Garmin devices, before they are released and for many devices he is the first one, who is allowed to post a review. I like his reviews very much, he is also giving negative feedback, but for me it seems, that he must have a magical hand for getting great gps accuracy for his devices. DCR, do you have your own satellite?

No one says that DCR isn`t one of the best, when it comes to tech reviews of sport equipment, and it doesn`t even mater if he has something in common with Garmin...the only thing that maters is that Garmin Fenix series (for other garmin devices I don`t know) has really BAD GPS reception...especially for the Garmin device (after all Gamin is pioneer in this area) in this price range!
I get much better GPS accuracy with Suunto Ambit 3 series, which price range is much lower, and it doesen`t even support Galileo or Glonas satellite system as Fenix is supposed to.

"Volker_I"....I also thought about the possibility that DRC uses different firmware that enables him to get that flawless GPS tracks...or maybe we are missing something....??
  • I don’t think that he is given different/better fw from Garmin. If there would be better/newer fw out, Garmin would have released it very quick for public use. It may be, that he earlier gets a newer fw for testing, but if that stuff is better, it would become public very quick to end these bad accuracy discussions.

Just a joke: perhaps DCR checks the time of the best satellite constellation for his activities before he runs and is just doing his runs during that short time period;)

It does not necessarily have to be a joke ;). I have quite a lot of pretty paths but there are worse. I do not understand jumps to the side, it is not much but always.

No, I have four of my own satellites, obviously. Can't do much with just one.
