GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
  • I received an email from Garmin agent asking me if SW 6.00 was improving GPS accuracy. I didn't notice any change and the GPS software is still in version 2.30.

Did you notice anything ? My track are still very bad and drunk man syndrom is still here...
  • Another disappointed Fenix 3 convert. Especially when walking even in open areas where one would expect good reception. And tried several times as well. Here is a drunken track as an example. Hope this can be greatly improved!

  • Seems like every new Garmin watch release will have it's own GPS accuracy track. It's quite laugh-able (to me)
I don't know for sure what garmin is doing to have these drunken maps in nearly every iteration of the watch.
Perhaps it's a cost issue as I've read that some GPS chipsets are better than others. Shruggie...

GPS on urban areas w/ tall building sucks really bad.. it' gets a lot better in the woods and esp more if you're cycling (faster speed) vs walking. I'm not sure, but perhaps it's a mixture of GPS drift coupled with GPS signal boucing off tall building walls.

  • There is a real problem when walking. On some other people tracks when they are using the watch in their car there is no problem but as soon as we are walking it's like the GPS is not enough accurate to know where it is.

I think it does not depend on the area with buildings or not it is just the GPS has a problem with low speed. You can also notice it when there is auto pause. When you activate auto pause, it does not work, you have to run to reactivate it because the GPS is not accurate enough, so it does not detect correctly your speed and where you are.

    This matches with my experiences.

Both, I believe. Where there are tall buildings or heavy tree cover or an inconvenient mountain to one side, you get more reflected signals (multipath), which are bad for the location calculation until the device can work out which are the reflected signals and ignore them. The faster you're moving, the easier it is to do this, because the Doppler effect on the signal frequency is larger and makes it easier to discriminate direct and reflected signals.

I`m using my Fenix 5x+ for app 4 month now, and I must say that it is a disappointment from GPS accuracy standpoint. Before I have been using Suunto Ambit 2 and
it was so much better...although it is useing just regular GPS network (without GALILEO and GLONAS)....??
I have moved from Suunto to Garmin Fenix series because it suppose to be "best on the market" (according to DC Rainmaker, and many others....), but I have to say that I never
had so much problems with Suunto that I have with Garmin...It seems like every SW update comes with some new problems...??
And there is also wrist HR....completely useless due to its inaccuracy during sport activity...it is literally al over the place....??
  • Jezdec I think you summarize main issues of this watch. I am also comming from Suunto ambit 2 (6 years old) and it is far more accurate than this one. I don't understand why no class action was raised in US for the Fenix 5X series ! It is supposed to be far more accurate with Galileo but I can bet Galileo is not used on this watch. Every test I saw was not showing any evidence of Galileo use.

On some watches like Fenix 1 and Foretrex, I had a lot of data about GPS,, showing sats above your head, accuracy in meter, Egnoss status,... You could have an idea of your GPS status but all these very usefull information were removed, surely because Garmin is aware of its lake in the GPS area...

I don't know what to do... I hope Garmin will recall the Fenix 5X and provide their customer with a replacement of another model !!

I agree...Garmin should do something about that (GPS inaccuracy) and also about other things that don`t work as thay should...(wrist HR almost unusable, etc...).but probably they won`t, because
we are just enought stupid to buy Garmin watches, just because it?s Garmin....and with every new update there are new issues...

We all read reviews from DC rainmaker and similar guys that say that Garmin is "best on market", but that simply is not the case....I had Suunto Ambit 2 for 5 years and did`t have
any problems with it...not to say that GPS accuracy was far better ...

SO PLEASE Garmin do something about that, because it is just not fair from you to sell watch for app 800,00€ with all that problems.
