GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
  • It was version firmware version 5.10 when i did the trip.

Yes, that can be seen in your link. But do you know your exact GPS version at the time?

The latest GPS 2.30 was delivered separately from the firmware updates. I don't know if the F5X+ also got it as part as the firmware 5.1 since I already had GPS 2.30 installed when I updated to 5.1. But I do know that the Fenix 5 (non-plus) around the same time got a firmware release where GPS 2.30 was missing, even though GPS 2.30 at that time had already been released for the Fenix 5. So for some Garmin models it was possible to have the latest firmware without the latest GPS version.

The reason I ask is that I had the same, wild outliers on my F5X+, but they disappeared after I installed one of the beta GPS versions a few months ago, probably GPS 2.24. So I am interested to know if this still happens with GPS 2.30.
  • I can understand your frustration, so jokes aside and one question;
Where these spikes occur, did you stop and resume the activity? I’m thinking the recording started before the gps position was stable.

No, the activity was recording constantly.

I don't know for sure but I believe it was 2.30
  • I sent my trace to [email protected]

I hope they will manage to solve this issue. I am laughing when I think about this watch is implementing Galileo (LOL). This watch is perfect for a lot of thing but the worst watch on the market for GPS.

did they reply with any information?
  • The tracking is indeed very poor. I had a 3X and 5 which were also terrible. I sent requested info, track links, and the contents of the Garmin folder on my 5x+ to [email protected] a month ago, Sept 30. I am sure they've been reviewing it very intently, and working on the latest "fix", which is why they haven't had time to respond to me yet.

I'm a little confused why they aren't able to take their watches outside and collect their own data, but hey, I got it for a discount price of USD$850, so I can understand why I also need to test the watch for them. Or maybe all the watches in Kansas are tracking perfectly.
  • When I first got my 5xplus I thought the tracks were decent, certainly no worse than my previous Garmin watches a Forerunner 910 xt and a Forerunner 935, but since last update it's got worse so bad that it misses segments saying off segment because my track has gone way off, not acceptable on a watch that costs this much, I called Garmin uk support and it really does depend on whom you speak to, but alas I had someone who knew little, and just told me to reset the watch, which is not ideal I will lose all my metrics etc, i've also noticed my altimeter has started to behave erratically when I start an activity it can jump up or down 50 meters, normal according to our friends at Garmin, in many years of training with these type of watches I've not had this before.
Personally I don't use music or garmin pay so these updates are pointless, but I would like to see the features that are supposed to work, work and work well, I as a customer feel let down by my current experience at the moment.

No, but I'va just sent it 2 days ago.

I don't understand why they need our files, they can just test it with their employees, giving them some watches for tests... They are developping their product like a 10 persons company, not serious... They are using their customers like testers, without no rewards, not acceptable for a watch at 1150 Euros.

Also, not only GPS accuracy is very bad and erratic but distances are completely wrong. When running, I've about 30 meters less each 200 meters !!

I tought Garmin was a professional brand, but forget it, even a chineese GPS is more reliable... I am not also speaking about the pulse OX that can kill you if you are relying on it at high altitude. It is completely wrong. It indicates you are about 70 or 80% that could mean you are near death...

This watch is not a professional tool, it is just a gadget and you must be aware about that before buying it. It is not also for high level Athlete unless you are willing to accept approximate data.
  • Considering this is marketed to serious multi-sport athletes, and the price, one would expect it to be the most accurate on the market. Instead, it is one of the worst! I can't believe i trusted it to record my once in a lifetime Kilimanjaro trek and it messed it up. You had one job, Garmin! I am so freaking gutted. I think I will send the watch back for a refund.
  • Sorry, but i find it funny that a wobbly red line on a map can mess up your "once in a lifetime" Kili trek. i'v worked, and still work with professional GPS equipment (Stonex) and even those ridiculously expensieve devices f**k up once in a while. i'm not saying that there is notting wrong with the software, just don't let a red line on a map kill your kili experience.

bro, it was an 8 day trek and every single day's track is as rubbish as this one. And when you look at the "Relive" video, it looks turd. This forms part of a bigger video which I am making to document the whole trek. so yeah, when you're relying on a very expensive bit of kit to get some good results, it's very disappointing.
