GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
  • The GPS tracking is really bad. This is a route I tracked - slow walking pace and never did we go off the track. So I'm not sure what those two spikes are!

  • Welcome to GPS bad accuracy team :) You track is very bad, yes.

At Kilimandjaro summit you should have never had any issue with GPS, Sky is clear at this altitude, no buildings surrounding :) .

May be you should sent your Garmin folder (without maps file) to make them improving the GPS...

I've had the Fenix 3, and the Fenix 5x. I spent a lot of money upgrading to the 5x Plus especially for this Kilimanjaro trip and the results of the track are really shockingly bad. Who do I send these files to in order to get the thing fixed? Or should I just send the expensive piece of rubbish back to Garmin for a refund? It is definitely NOT fit for purpose. All the tracks that I recorded on my expedition are this bad and it has really put a downer on my trip.

  • Hello,
You bought this watch only to record a track of this trip? Did you get lost or take a wrong turn due to the watch gps accuracy?

I’m taking a chance and guessing the answer is no. :)

Yes, I bought it for the Pulse Ox meter because I was at 5895m altitude! Lol.

I did not take any wrong turns - the watch is just the world's worst for recording an accurate track. I was using GPS-only mode so there was no chance of any weirdness from Galileo or Glonass. Stupid thing. I love Garmin watches but this is really disappointing, especially for such an expensive watch.
  • Just for my information what version of the GPS do you got in your watch ?

It was version firmware version 5.10 when i did the trip.
  • I sent my trace to [email protected]

I hope they will manage to solve this issue. I am laughing when I think about this watch is implementing Galileo (LOL). This watch is perfect for a lot of thing but the worst watch on the market for GPS.
  • I can understand your frustration, so jokes aside and one question;
Where these spikes occur, did you stop and resume the activity? I’m thinking the recording started before the gps position was stable.
  • the same route to office , in the morning, in the evening
