GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
  • When the Fenix 5 plus series first appeared there was some talks that say these plus series have newer GPS chips. However, after seeing old Fenix 5X GPS version is updated to the same 2.20 I think they still use the old MTK 3333 platform...
  • I was hesitating with the Casio Rangeman GPR-B1000 which is solar but I must admit that on the Fenix, you have all date you can imagine, It calculates my Vo2 MAx alone, it is conencted with my weight scale,... On this aspect, we can't do better than the Fenix. If it was solar, it would be the aboslute perfect watch.
If I was sure they will fix this GPS accuracy issue, I would have continue with Garmin.

For your information, if you use the warranty, you will not have a new watch, I read that Garmin is always providing refurbished watch for warranty...

I will let you informed ;-)

The Casio was a big hope but the ergonomy is IMHO a "joke" if you want to use the functions: the rotation of a tiny crown to switch function is easy while resting in a coach not in the wild, while swimming or even walking... The Garmin Fenix Series on the other side can be operated with ease even without watching the screen and the vibration feedbacks are enough to know if a function is ready.

I have exchange my previous Fenix 5X because of HR sensor cracking... And they have sent me a new (not refurbished) unit with new golden pins. So the customer service is tip top, slow but great. ;-)

Also I have used the Fenix 5X Plus a lot for tracking while in various vehicules: the speed, the distance, everything was spot on compared to other equipments on board. With the speed, the tracing is much much better. :-)
  • Yes, I agree with you Nemo, Casio canno't compare with all functions and GPS is a gadget. The scale can't go under 2KM ! If you like G-shock it's ok but for GPS functions it is far away from the Fenix.

About my watch, I brought it back to the shop. They told me they cannot refund, so I ask for a new watch. At first, they told me they will just take my watch and give me another one and I will keep my original box. Problem : They tried at first to give me a watch that was not sealed. I refused. I also refused to have a watch that is not corresponding to the watch since serial numbers (engraved on the watch) and on the box will not match.

At the end, they accept to give me an "avoir" and next week I will purchase from them another 5X Plus when they will receive sealed box. Hope I will not have other problems....

What is frightened me is that when I show them my comparison between Suunot AMbit 9 and Fenix 5X Plus (that I posted on this forum), they told me that it will be impossible for the Fenix to have the same accuracy like the Ambit 2 :rolleyes::mad: When I've gone for purchased it the first time, they told me it was the most accurate GPS and the better watch ever...

    Wait and see...
  • BTW is it a Parisian shop for runners (like the one near Montparnasse or near Monceau) or a watch shop (like the one near Concorde) ?
  • BTW is "By the way."

Bring The Waffles !! But YMMV... IMHO.

Yes it's a Parisian shop for runners, near avenue de Friedland It's the Pope :)

If you have some good adresses for next time, tell me ;-)
  • I bought mine on Internet Irun in Toulouse. Giving me 30 days of return policy. But I have kept it with no regret. :-)

Like I said for my uses the GPS is enough accurate and it's only a side of my uses: shortcuts, timing, ABC, weather widgets, vibration alarms (this is the only watch which can wake me up) great autonomy, HR, Level of O2, Skywatch (great for spotting Mars or Jupiter in a blink...), Sendpoints... So many uses !

Urban Canyons are tricky. Proximity of high building is tricky. Always been. But once on a boat the Fenix is a real asset.

But I'm looking forward any new Beta. Hoping for a way the engineers could integrate the gyro and motion sensors to avoid any "artefacts" in the tracking. :-)
  • Did a 15k trail run with the F5x+ (on wrist) and the older F3 (in hydration bag) and the attached results shows that the F5x+ seems to hold better GPS comparatively to the older F3.
Note: RED = F3. (for some reason, i can't get a shareable link from the site - WTracks).

The screenshot shows how the F5x+ is more able to follow the road (tarmac) on the left side of the screenshot.

  • I just put in 41 miles hiking and peak bagging in Colorado's Weminuche wilderness. I built some courses before heading out and have no complaints about the accuracy of the GPS. There were times where I passed through rather difficult terrain for GPS (granite river gorge, next to and climbing near vertical rock, etc), but overall the Fenix 5x Plus was awesome. I'll probably write up a trip report detailing how I used it, the few places where it did struggle, and where it really shined if I get the time. The bottom line is the GPS and the courses I built, were accurate enough that I was able to navigate in a challenging wilderness area that i'd never visited without getting lost or taking a single wrong turn. I never even had to look at the paper map I carried.
