GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
• The trace you have is what I am expecting to have from the watch ! I hope it is not an hardware issue... I am reviving what I knew with Fenix 1, debugging the watch all the time...

I don't know why the 5Xplus has its trace like a fractal... It is not straigh, it's like the GPS is alaways hesitating about where it is.

So it confirms that there is a problem with the Fenix 5xPlus.
• This is my tracks with only GPS this morning.
The Lock on road is effectively independant from the tracing.
This is the first time I was able to notice it, as I have certain it was straightening my previous tracks on my old F5.
(You got an example on my other messages).

So today I have noticed how the urban canyon were jamming with my position. Especially when I was walking along high building (8 floors) but then on the bridge and the park the track was much better and spot on when I have taken a little stair at the end of the island de la Jatte (Ferris Bueller's fans). After crossing the Bridge of Levallois, again the high buildings make my track like the one of a drunk man...

So... dear Garmin's people:
I would love to see some kind of inertia in the way the 5X Plus "sees" my position. The Fenix should be able to avoid to take in consideration any aberrations in my position as it got a 3D compass and an accelerometer to work with.
This "inertial" calculations should be able to give smoother tracks.

• Hope they will hear you at Garmin. You find the right words, the problem with the GPS is the "drunk man syndrom". It seems so that Galileo is just a lie, It doesn't bring anything more... Can't understand how there is not a class action about it. Garmin is lying to their customers.

As you can see with this tool : https://www.gnssplanning.com/#/charts You have about 4 to 6 Galileo sat above our heads so it should help and not providing nothing like the situation we have now.

More than 2000 people read this post but Garmin is not even communicating about this issue.

I hope my vendor will accept to refund me.
• Thanks Nemo !

I wrote to [email protected] They can analyse fit files to see if there is a problem with GPS. They adviced me to put the beta version but in beta version, the GPS software is the same 2.20, so I didn't understand why we should put it...
• Today I have set GPS+Galileo and 1 second recording.

The track was good until I reach the high buildings of La Defense.

Those high flat surfaces are really creating delusions to the GPS ...
I have taken some pictures to show my environment.

The way back was much better:

• BTW I have made an very easy fix from inside my flat for various widgets tonight. (GPSmetrics)
The GPS is perhaps no accurate but it is very sensible !! The fix is made in 10 seconds !!!
I'm living in a rooftop flat but I got a ceiling above my head..... :-)
• Yes , I noticed too that the fix is very quick, no probelm about that, in less than 10 seconds I have a fix. I would have prefered to have a longest fix but a more accurate trace. Hope it is just software and not hardware issue.

I will return my watch this afternoon, hesitating between trying another one or just being refunded.
• Dans le doute, get a refund, you can always keep that budget for later purchase and a similar model (the titanium 5 plus cost the same minus the OX)... or see (like I have done) if you can be happier with another brand. ;-)
I have jumped from Garmin to Casio for the last 6 months. I'm back to Garmin as GPS is only a part of what I really need in a modern watch. Fenix's multiple stopwatches widgets and timers and ABC and HR and vibration alerts.... and very useful and hard to find on non-touch screen watches. Also the color screen which can be used in all conditions (night and day...)...
Being 34 days after my purchase, If my 5X+ ever let me down I will over use the warranty. :-)
• I was hesitating with the Casio Rangeman GPR-B1000 which is solar but I must admit that on the Fenix, you have all date you can imagine, It calculates my Vo2 MAx alone, it is conencted with my weight scale,... On this aspect, we can't do better than the Fenix. If it was solar, it would be the aboslute perfect watch.
If I was sure they will fix this GPS accuracy issue, I would have continue with Garmin.

For your information, if you use the warranty, you will not have a new watch, I read that Garmin is always providing refurbished watch for warranty...

I will let you informed ;-)
