GPS accuracy very bad !!

Hi,

Tried yesterday the GPS for the first time (GPS + Galileo) and I was very disappointed but the quality of the trace. I am in Paris so in city but I ve never a so bad GPS. In the same area, my Ambit 2 is perfect and following my route but with the Fenix 5X plus, I have more than 40 meters error sometimes !!

I can't understand how a watch costing 4 times a GPS watch can be so bad !! Is there something to do ? I sync it with Garmin connect mobile to have last sat data.

May be it can be a technical problem with the watch... Is there a widget to check GPS accuracy ?

Thanks
  • But in one the old 5X reviews I remember finding back then that the 5X was choosing the best satellites "fleet" not adding both fleet.

I do not believe this is correct. Everything i have read is that it uses both constellations in the calculations. I wish Garmin would just create an "auto" mode that would look at the satellites available in the sky and pick the best combo for the user while it was getting a GPS fix. I'd be willing to wait a bit longer for my initial fix for this ability.

  • I'm 100% agree with you as it would be logical knowing how scarce the Galileo satellites are in the sky. (Just checking with my Samsung S8)
But in one the old 5X reviews I remember finding back then that the 5X was choosing the best satellites "fleet" not adding both fleet.
I remember seeing comparaison of the numbers of satellites available Glonass being less in number.
Perhaps they update that behavior with the new chipset ? Perhaps that review was wrong for starters ?
Anyway I have never found GPS+Glonass (on the old 5X) bringing better tracks than GPS alone.
Now I'm on GPS+Galileo for my walking sets and Ultratrac for Track me set (used mainly in off road cars).
The 5X+ is really faster than the 5X in acquisition and fix.

Perhaps Garmin team could answer to us about that ?

I wish Garmin just made a page where we can see the satellites on the sky and signal levels.

For me GPS + Glonass fix is really fast compared to GPS or GPS + Galileo. Glonass has shorter ephemeris messages so it takes less time to get data for the first fix. But when using Galileo option even after seeing the green ring it can turn into a red ring...
  • I called Garmin today about GPS accuracy.

They told me that at first time I used the GPS I should have waited for 20 minutes to have the fix as some of you told me in this thread. They told me then to make a hard reset and to make a 20 minutes fix in a clear area. I hope it will work but I have a lot of settings on the watch so I wanted to know if it is possible to save my settings and what to save in the watch ?

Is there a solution to init sat capture only for this 20 minutes fix instead of having to do a hard reset for the whole watch ? What can I do to make the watch thinking it’s its first GPS fix ?
  • Aaaaah you have called Nanterre ! Way to go !!
A hard reset is the best way to start clean now that you know what you want and need.
All your records will be saved with your profile on Garmin.
But the choice of widgets and apps will be yours to download again. It's very fast to find them on Garmin Express and put them back in. No big deal really.
(Oh, good news, you should have also an update of the GPS, just got a quick one today... I'm on 2.20 now... and sensor hub 2,10.... not sure which one was update... )
    :-)
  • The first time you are using the GPS it is trying to download the almanac data from the GPS satellites. This probably takes 20 minutes or so and most people never notice. I don't know that you need a factory reset to improve accuracy, but potentially you have set something that needs changed.
  • Yes I called Nanterre ! :)

Yes it is very important to wait 20 minutes the first time. I don't know why there is not a simple reset for the GPS instead of doing a hard reset.
  • I haven't waited 20 minutes the first time... I made a fix the first day, then I went for a walk to test it later that day.
Never waited. Just notice how quick it was able to make that first fix... So I don't know how the ephemeris are loaded.
I thought it was through Garmin (wifi, cable, bluetooth) not the sats...

  • Not sure how the 20 minutes is coming up again as a must do as this was only a requirement on one F3 update years ago

If this is the case it should be in the instructions and you would need to do the 20 minutes on some type of regular basis which is the purpose of the watch getting regular EPO.BIN files updates every week ?

Not really sure how the watch would know which is best especially when choosing from different flavors?

I can see how a person would know from some research on there location in the world and which system works best in there location
  • Some good stuff on understanding GPS accuracy and the factors that effect it it here https://the5krunner.com/2018/07/18/gps-accuracy-hdop-pdop-gdop-multipath-the-atmosphere/

Also just to add that the EPO.BIN files cover off the ephemeris data, but the 20 minute GPS soak gets both the ephemeris and almanac data.
  • I tried the Fenix 5X Plus this morning and compared it to my old Suunto Ambit 2 that was purchased at half the price of the Fenix. I can't understand how this watch is so bad !! It is meant to be for professionnal but even a chineese GPS watch is better. I was with GPS + Galileo.

Just before beginning my race, I wait about 15 minutes with the GPS on to be sure it will have a good fix.

I don't know how bloguers could claim that this watch was very precise, we must not have the same watch or Gamin did not give them the same model. I have never seen a so bad watch in accuracy.

For people who are hesitating about purchasing this Fenix Plus, DON'T BUY IT. Don't spend 850 Euros for a piece of garbage like this.

I think they are aware their GPS is so bad that is why theyu removed precision information. On previous Garmin watch, we had a precision value in meters that was very useful to know if the GPS willl be ok or not but now, we have no information about precision.ciq.forums.garmin.com/.../1378238.jpg
