GPS Accuracy

Anyone else a little disappointed? I’ve completed at least 20 runs now and the majority have major anomalies in GPS tracking. Just today I’ve completed Leeds 10k and it had a spike in the GPS track that had me across the city. My 935 was much more stable.
  • Same here... I also had a Forerunner 935 that I find to be superior. Hopefully things will improve over time.

What I don’t understand is why the Plus series only sports a single band Galileo receiver. Especially at the new, even more “affordable” pricing across the range.

Hopefully it will improve. I’ve had many runs now where it seems to have large spikes where my track just jumps across the map and then back again. For Leeds 10k today I switched from gps + Galileo to gps only to see if that helped but it still seems to be the same. My 935 was definitely superior and definitely more consistent.

How does the Suunto 9 compare?
  • i've only done 4 runs so far (using gps+galileo) but i'm mighty impressed by the accuracy. however, on one of the runs i think i also experienced what you call spikes, see image
  • Went on a hike with wife and her Vivoactive 3. Vivoactive 3 was considerably more accurate, putting us much closer to path shown on Google Maps and not having so many "side adventures." Could it be metal body of Fenix series just can't perform as well as plastic bodies of cheaper watches?

In my opinion the gps accuracy isn’t as good as my 935 but unlike my old Fenix 5 at least it remains connected to sensors. It seems with Garmin you can’t have everything.
  • Any update with this? Get any better? I'm not too happy with the distance accuracy of my 5x plus, so far while mountain biking . Mine was about 1/10th of a mile less per 1 mile, when compared to other devices used at the same time, today. Maybe my other devices are wrong (I hope this is the case)? Garmin forerunner 305 and Android phone w/ Strava app ( w/ good cell coverage).

Don't think it's metal. Ambit 3 peak has metal part too, yet its gps accuracy is still one of the best.
  • I'm going to have to actually do some more comparisons. Just did another short ride (3.5 miles) and had very close results among 3 out of 4 devices with the 5x plus lining up with the majority.

I'm trying suunto 9 now. Its gps accuracy in best performance is going to go the way ambit 3 peak legendary accuracy.

That said, if you love apps and customization, you might want to stick with garmin.. If you want both accuracy and apps, stick with garmin 935
  • I see this jumping behaviour only when I have the recording settings to "every second". I use "smart" and I'm happy with the GPS recordings.

I did a ride yesterday on singletracks where a good chunk of the route was under the cover of trees with little or no line of sight to the sky. I would say that the GPS was spot on with only 1 or 2 places where the recorded line paralleled the tracks/roads with about 10-20 meters distance between them. (comparison made with google aerial photo)

This ride was done with Smart recording and GPS+Galileo. (Perhaps the fact that the watch was mounted facing up on the handlebar as opposed to tilted on a wrist, helped the accuracy .) This was a bicycle ride where every second recording is overkill.

IMO every second recording is overkill for most activities. Perhaps the exception is interval running with instant pace.
