Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • Quadrider10 agree with Chatlow you shouldn't need to shut down everything just to get sensible battery life out of the watch

I get about 3-4% drain per 10 hours of time during sleeping. Thats .3% per hourn. not bad by any means, but was just curious on how to obtain more I guess lol. Most of these features I don't use everyday. So it's not a big deal for me overall .

the only time i notice a lot of battery drain is when im using the strength app and listening to music. i started today at 96% and ended an 1hr workout at 79%.
  • Quadrider10 well the more you turn off the more you save - do you use standard watch face - there are some of the custom faces that can drain power. Seems like music is a big drain which I guess is not surprising - that's a facility I don't use. Surely though the point of having a watch with all these features is to be able to have them switched on and still have reasonable battery life

Yeah fair enough I guess. I'm not using the stock watch face. I'm using one I bought called "Alpha". I turned off the seconds and set it to distance so it won't update every second.
  • What I cannot understand of this is that the issue is not in everyone, some experience the drain problem and others not, which means that must be something hardware related, am I right? So...waiting for a software update will help little on fixing the issue...so not sure what Garmin is thinking/planning to do then to solve the problem...any thoughts?
  • Nehows - It could be HW related as you say but also with these watches there are so many options to configure even before you include Connect IQ apps and watch faces. Additionally people are connecting to a variety of phones and in some cases BT connection problems can impact battery life. Don't know what Garmin are planning to do - but I do know that they are looking at examples of battery drain problems and trying to understand the reasons in order to fix them.

    Same here.
    .3% per hour is good!

    Hello,

    yes it can !

I got a brand-new watch back from Garmin a few weeks ago (sent back for a button issue).

I connected it to my phone using the Garmin connect app (Android – phone is Samsung galaxy A3 2017)

Everything was fine, but not quite… the watch was connected to the phone, but the connection kept dropping, and I was unable to sync an activity because the connection would drop before syncing could finish. I had to use wifi.
Also, the battery life was poor: I could not get more than 5 to 6 days in smartwatch mode (15-17%/day), disappointing….

Recently I went to the Bluetooth menu of the phone: surprise ! No Fenix 5 plus in the list of connected devices.
So i put the watch in scan mode, and re-connected it through the Bluetooth menu of the phone (had to re-enter a code). The watch was now in the connected devices list.

Since then, the BT connection has been a lot more stable, and battery usage in smartwatch mode has dropped by half, down to 7-8% /day

So, android users with a battery problem definitely want to check the Bluetooth menu on their phone ;-)

    Hope this will help
  • I had my original 5Plus replaced (bluetooth issue, wouldn't sync with the app), that went 6 days between two charges.
The battery life of the replacement device is as some wrote here before me: drains 50% per day.

I'm on the second charging cycle now. First time it drained to 3%, charged it overnight, took it off of the charger around 6AM, went for a ~50 minutes run with GPS, no music. Next day it was 48% in the morning.
I hard rebooted it, found a (built in) watch face that doesn't use a seconds hand, reduced backlight to 5%, no WiFi sync... I'm updating the maps now via Garmin Express to see if that changes anything. Didn't switch HR monitoring off, because, seriously. 2 days?

I'll check that battery widget someone mentioned (he battery drain is around 2.8% per hour now, would be nice to see it exactly).

  • I'm using diijr battery widget My f5p drain in smartwatch mode is 0.25 - 0.28% per hour
