Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • I'm on my 5th day of owning the Fenix 5, and have fully charged it 4 times. I use ~60% of the battery in 24 hours, and have wi-fi, and auto-sync turned off, have completely disabled the automatic backlight, I'm using the default watch face, and turned off notifications completely. The watch isn't even a smartwatch now, since it doesn't get notifications. I'm also not playing music or doing anything obviously demanding.

Is this just a faulty battery or level indicator? There's no way I should need to charge the watch every day, especially since it takes nearly 2 hours to charge.

I recommend letting the watch completely discharge so it turns off. Charge it overnight (i.e. a long time!) and then when you wake up, reset it by pressing the Light button for around 10 seconds. Try not to use 3rd party watch faces. Re-test it.
  • Unless your gps is switched on continuously or you run a third party app or wf that is really bad (e.g. has some memory leaks or other bad programming) you have a lemon I guess. I'd return it asap if this continues after rebooting it and charging it to 100%.

My F5 lost about 0.2 % per hour in smartwatch mode with the nofrills wf. So I got 21 days out of a charge if I didn't use the gps.

Mine was even worse because I got full discharge in 20 hours. I still suspect that the gps chip inside the watch was on all the time and draining the battery because when I was actually doing exercise that did have gps enabled the battery drain did not get much worse and I bet battery would have lasted 16 hours when using gps even if when gps was not in use and I was just doing 24h heart rate monitoring battery only lasted 20 hours.

I sent my watch to garmin on tuesday. I hope they will send me something that works better.
  • Sample size of one here. I bought a used F5+ Sapphire off ebay back around Christmas time. When I got it there was about 20% charge and after setting it up and installing the Battery Widget it was showing ~.6%-.8% discharge per hour in smart watch mode. I tried the method mentioned above about letting it completely discharge and the charging over night but that didn't effect the rate the battery drained.

After a couple of more recharge cycles one day I put the F5+ on the charger and went to my F5S+ for a little over a week and left the Sapphire on the charger the whole time. I took Sapphire off the charger last Friday evening and right now 6 days later it's at 54% with a couple of TM runs and a couple of Zwift sessions included (TM running doesn't seem to be a big draw with just HR and RD pod paired, but Zwift can get up to .8%/hr with all of my bike sensors paired)

Mean while the F5S+ still has higher than expected battery drain and it's going to get the multiple day recharge treatment next to see if that clears it up on that device as well.

How is everyone charging their watches ? Just through computer USB ? Obviously it only comes with the charging cable and no wall adapter etc
  • Computer USB usually as I use GE for updates and synching at the same time. Can't see why a wall adaptor wouldn't work as long as the specs are suitable.
  • Graysa23 I use mainly an old Garmin adaptor that came (probably) with my 610 but sometimes computer USB I think most quality USB chargers would be OK but I'd avoid connecting to a cheap super-fast charger of which there are quite a few around with fairly dodgy electronics
  • I charge mine with a USB wall wart, works fine. I have not had battery issues with my 5+. When I charge it, I plug it in before I go to sleep and take it off when I get up, so it always gets at least 7 hours charge when I do it. Okay, sometimes just 6. But no issues here. Then again, it's cold and I have not used the GPS much.
  • does anyone know if using Galileo + GPS is likely to use lot more battery than GPS only ? Not sure I should bother using both for running (although it does seem more accurate) given that the UK are now looking at their own system. Need to know more about this but if anyone can recommend, I would appreciate it. Currently, bike rides using GPS only seem to use less battery than runs of the same recorded time.

Also - has anyone noticed an improvement in battery since using Android Pie over Oreo?

    Thanks,
  • chatlow Galileo + GPS I would expect the additional battery drain to be negligible - whether it improves your GPS track is another question their seems to be a range of experiences reported on here - but it can speed up getting an initial fix.Not sure what you are saying about UK looking at their own system - if that happens can't seeing anything appear before 10 years down the line. Interesting that your bike rides seem to use less battery - can't immediately think of a reason!
