Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • I got the same suggestion from the support. If I do that: am I getting a NEW one? Otherwise I will send it back to the shop (my fenix 5 plus is < 14 days old ...

It took 5 days for Garmin to turn around the replacement and it looks like I got a new watch, but my was over a month old, it may be best to send it back to the original seller.
  • When I spoke to Garmin UK they said they needed proof of the battery drain orherwise they are not interested. Very disappointed in this response. Not sure what else I can do. They seemingly don’t care. I wish I could downgrade back to the 5 or my old 935 which is now sold.

Did Garmin say what proof they wanted? I originally sent support an email, follow their suggestion, found the suggestion did not work and so spoke direct with Garmin.
  • What I have noticed is that for the last 24 hours I have had no battery drain, and I have used the watch to record a 90 min strength and 30 mins treadmill run. I have a feeling the battery indicator has stopped working.
  • Just reset the watch and the battery indicator has jumped from 81% where is has been for 24 hours to 87%.
  • Did Garmin say what proof they wanted? I originally sent support an email, follow their suggestion, found the suggestion did not work and so spoke direct with Garmin.

They said they wanted me to provide written proof of the drain, i.e. timestamps with % drop. I will do this, but for the price of the watch why do I have to? If it was £50 watch from China I would expect it, not Garmin's premium product. It is obvious just on this thread alone how many other people are suffering the same issue.

Oh and I also mentioned the battery meter getting stuck, mine jumps all over the place after reboots. Their response was...'I am afraid there is not much troubleshooting we can try for this issue. as far as I am aware this is going to be visual glitch, and does not affect the use of the device'. Again...another 'go away you are just a pain' reply.

It does make me question buying another Garmin product in the future.
  • Just wondering if the battery display problems are firmware or battery related because if I have understood correctly pretty much all batteries nowadays are smart and they report voltage to the rest of the system and firmware calculates the percentage based on that voltage. If that is correct it could be that either that the battery is reporting erratic voltage readings or the problem is with how firmware calculates the percentage of battery left.
  • That was my last hope. But: reset + loading full + only smartwatch-mode = after 5 days fenix switched off (battery empty)
So it ist not (only) a reporting problem.
I think I will send it back.
    But should I try it again? I don´t know ... :(
  • [FONT=trebuchet ms]Same battery issue with my Fenix5.
    Purchase date : 2018.12.16 (1 month)
    Yesterday 2019.01.16 charging results :
    - At 14:20 = 100%
    - At 15:00 = 88%
    - At 18:00 = 11%
    I called Garmin support.
Their answer : "...of course it is not normal,
    1. soft reset to stop if there is something running on background
    2. if the problem remains => send it back to check it.
    "

    I'll keep you updated

    Best regards!

  • gandrian For the Fenix 5 at least Garmin has issued a Beta-Update to 12.21, which you should check out. So far the first results seem promising, you can read more in this thread.
