Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • Gr4z which version do you have - some people have said that the titanium seems to be more susceptible to scrathes. I have mainly knocked mine against doors and doorframes as well as the odd wall and as yet I have no noticeable wear or scrathes.
  • @JSRUNNER_ I have the Sapphire Black model. I really do wish I had bought the titanium version simply to hide the scratches. The weight savings didn't bother me when I tried them on in the shop. I am usually very careful with my stuff and, as mentioned in another thread, all I did is close a plastic lid and it caught the watch and a large scratch across the bezel appeared. I look at it all the time now as it's in my face. Just can't believe something that costs this much isn't a little tougher, I can deal with everyday scuffs but not a gouge from something so trivial.

    My OCD is in overdrive.
  • Chrisly - think the best you can do is disable auto-upload under wifi settings on the watch and / or GC. I do this and just sync manually if im not using BT.

Auto-Upload (wifi) is disabled. So I can do nothing else?

    Smartwatch-Mode, 3 activities/week; no GPS; bluetooth: a few minutes/day for synchronize:

my old Fenix 5: 15-20 days!
my new Fenix 5 Plus: 6 days (0,6%/hour)...

Last 2 days: 1,2%-1,5% / hour (25-30% / day) (also in the night!) in smartwatch-mode! No activity, no bluetooth, no wifi, original Garmin watchface

  • I haven't posted here before in this thread, and I also have this battery issue. Always more than 1.5% discharge per hour on average on a Fenix 5 plus.

I have tried everything on my Fenix 5 Plus to improve battery life, and it lasts at maximum around 3.5 days when I run daily for about an hour.
No special watch faces, no seconds or pulse on watch face, etc.

A typical day for me was that every morning I needed to put the Fenix 5 plus on the charger for 40 minutes, which would bring it up from 50% to around 80%, and then repeat the procedure daily.
I had the 935 previously which lasted way over a week with daily running, and I only charged it once in the weekend. Was much easier to fit into a daily schedule.

Right now I have actually stopped using it as my daily driver since it's just too cumbersome to remember to charge it every day.
Instead I use an Apple Watch 4, and just bring out the Garmin when training to get accurate running power, temperature, and heart rate.
Otherwise the Fenix 5 is powered off. Which is really a shame because I like the always-on display and the all-day activity tracking accuracy.

If I were to guess, it might be the new CPU in the 5 Plus series that uses way more battery than Garmin anticipated. Might be a mix between their really old operating system, old CPUs that have been overclocked too much, and bad developers. And perhaps a mixture of everything.

  • Looks like you might need to contact Gamin support. You experience is vey different to mine with the 5+ battery life.
  • jsanneblad agree with philipshambrook my 5+ is significantly worse than my 935 but that's to be expected - it is not discharging at the rate yours appears to be. Mine has BT and wireless on constantly. Last Charging was a Monnday (from 9% to 100%) next charge Sunday Evening (from 9%) after 2.75 Hours of non-GPS activity - pool swim and 2.4 Hours of GPS activity (Running) with 24/7 HR monitoring no music etc. I'm getting almost 7 days with activities. If you are depleting at 1.5% per hour then you presumably are getting less than 3 days of battery life even with no activities? The only oddity I have is that my watch seems to stick at 100% for about 12 Hours after a full charge. Seems like you should report to Garmin support.
  • @jsanneblad when my Fenix 5+ had a battery drain of three days I spoke with Garmin Support and they replaced the watch. At the moment I have been using the new watch since 5:30am last Friday, I have done 1 Hours Run, two Strength sessions of 90 mins, one Treadmill of 30 mins and one 90 min Run using Music. The watch, now at 2pm Tuesday, is at 62%. Not as good as my Fenix 5 but seem to be meeting expectation of the Fenix 5+. Should say that I do not use the watch for notification and only sync by wifi manually.
  • Hi,

Could it be that the battery measurement on the watch is not calibrated. It does not know the true 100% and 0%.

I would let the watch drain till it powered down by itself and then charge it up to 100% over the night or extended time. (Even if the watch shows 100%, the battery may not be fully charged)
It is not uncommon and I've had this issue on iphones and other devices.

And so...how is possible to solve? Same problem for me after the last update (sw 6.00)

I had a similar problem with my iPhone(s) since the 2011 (iP4, 4S, 5, 6S). The battery goes totally down during my acivities in mountain below 5°C and then turn off completely after about 10 minutes of exposure to the cold and re-ignite after 10 minutes from the return home. With the latest update, my iPhone 6S no longer has this problem and the battery keeps the charge even below 0 ° C!

So it could be a problem on the last software update.

I got the same suggestion from the support. If I do that: am I getting a NEW one? Otherwise I will send it back to the shop (my fenix 5 plus is < 14 days old ...
  • When I spoke to Garmin UK they said they needed proof of the battery drain orherwise they are not interested. Very disappointed in this response. Not sure what else I can do. They seemingly don’t care. I wish I could downgrade back to the 5 or my old 935 which is now sold.
