Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • lucky1976 what do you mean by connected my hrms show in the list of sensors but as you scroll down each one says searching not connected

Under setting-sensors-HRM showed connected but i wasn’t wearing it and finished my run. I just check now and it said searching
  • That definitely isn't right. Where are you based?
    Give it one more shot.

I bought in Cotswold UK and explicttly asked for a sealed box, as they had some that were not.

It doesn’t seem to be region specific. I bought the 5x plus at REI in US and got RMA Fenix 5 in Czech Republic. Both were sealed as brand new, but completely dead after unboxing. It appears to be a sign of faulty battery.

Btw: my friend has the F5 and it lasts 2 weeks in watch mode as specified by Garmin.

  • Mine was completely dead and needed a PC to boot into life. So far the battery is good. I hope it remains that way. Perhaps a dead battery is a bad sign but not necessarily always a dead cert of problems.
  • So 15% after 13days with no BT and 2.5 hrs GPS.

I think my battery is on spec.

Ill come back here if/when things change.
  • I'm back.

Weird. Sat at my desk and not being doing any activities and my watch just decided to say "power save in..." And then count down from 30.

    No activities running or anything.

    What's that all about?

Mine 5s+ sap is on it's way back - the battery drain (30% in 24 hours on watch mode, with 1 x 7 min beep test indoor activity no GPS) is killing me. At this rate, I wouldn't even get through a marathon. I'm super mad about it as I love the design and think Garmin are being super cheeky by getting me to pay to return and pay to ship another out (if I don't want to wait 5-10 days for delivery). Have updated my post in here. Absolutely gutted the Beta update didn't fix.

Exactly the same experience as mine. Unfortunately in my case with both units I had.

Both units? Wow that's bad. I knew mine was really bad yesterday when I was doing motorway driving, sat perfectly still, flat roads and with about1000 odd real steps beforehand - the device congratulated me on doing 50 flights of steps....

Not sure if I try again as massively hacked off. Should never have 'upgraded'...
  • Yes, both brand new units. Read my previous posts on this page for details. I suspect the G has a quality control issue. Perhaps, it is a battery vendor issue and they will fix it.
I am crossing my fingers and believe that I get fixed one next time.
  • Reading the list of changes in FW v6, nothing mentioned battery life explicitly, but I wonder if this fix will help:
    • Fixed an intermittent issue where the device could switch to high power mode, and search for GPS and other ANT/BT sensors while playing music outside of an activity.
