Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • Massive battery drain on beta 4.59.... :-(

    Charged F5S+ to 100%
    Charged FR645 to 100%

    Ran 12k in 1 hour.

    F5S+ down to 84%
    FR645 down to 93%

    30 min later

    F5S+ down to 80%
    FR645 still on 93%

    Extremly dissapointing...!O(/&!)/%!!

I have had the same thing happen with my 5S Plus. I find that if I limit the use of the backlight to only after dark and only 20%, do not use WiFi, only use GPS - not with Glonass & Galileo, and reboot after an activity that uses GPS, I am able to get about 3.5 days. That includes two 45 minute runs with music during that time as well as several other activities that do not use GPS.
  • But...

This is a state of the art masterpiece from Garmin. So not using WIFI and reboot after an exercise is just not acceptable...!!)(/%¤&!

On today's 15k run, startet with:

    FR 645 = 53%
    F5S+ = 39%

    After the run:

    FR 645 = 36% (lost 15%)
    F5S+ = 14% (lost 24%)

Since start (Wednesday 2000 and till now Saturday 2000, FR 645 is down to 36% and F5S+ 14%). Like I said, this is not good enough. I'm gonna return Fenix and wait for Polar's oncoming Vantage V.

    I'm so dissapointed :-(

FWIW - the display on my FR 645 is also much nicer to look at. Black is black and white is more bright.

Well - yeah I'm - well you know it...

This is really useful info, especially given nat the 645 isn't known for having good battery life. Thanks for posting it.

I'm doing a similar comparison with the 5 Plus and my old 935. I'm finding I need to recharge the 5 Plus about every 4 days with just two GPS workouts, two indoor workouts and daily wear use. It's not even close to what I expected based on the published battery specs.

The big drops are activities like running. This is where Fenix really suffers. Once standby is on, actually they both are good. But never the less, Fenix definitely has an issue regarding battery and is FAR off the advertised 7 days.

    So back it goes...!
  • To add the everyone else’s experience. Brand new fenix 5+ 100% battery at 7.00a.m. One 33 minute run, and one 23 minute walk. Both with GPS+ glonass. No other use other than heart rate. 20:46 now and battery is at 85%
  • Yesterday bike activity 2 hours gps only from 50% went to 44%...running gps only 20min with music went from 42% to 36%....i am on 4.20 version...for 2 hours bike activity with gps only 6% is very good i think...

I’m having the same issue. I bought a brand new 5 Plus. Charged it to 100% and 24 hours later my battery is down to 70%. This is so frustrating. I upgraded from a Fenix 5X which had an incredible battery life. I can’t believe I spend $800 with Garmin only to find out the battery life they advertise is nowhere near the truth. I wish I would have just kept the watch I had in the first place.
  • A couple of observations –

Spent the past two days observing how the 5+ compared with the 935 as far as battery use goes (measured with Battery Meter).

Started the day with each watch charged to 100%. Yesterday I had an 75 minute indoor run and 50 minute GPS walk. The 5+ burned about 13% battery. The 935 9%. The heaviest activity was the outdoor run, but there was no noticeable after-activity battery discharge.

Today I had a 2 hour, 15 minute GPS run with a Stryd connected. The 5+ used about 22% of it’s battery during the run, and the 935 14%. Immediately after the run the 5+ was discharging at a rate of up to 2% per hour, while the 935 was less than 0.5% per hour. As the day continued, the 5+ rate of battery burn decreased.

As of now (about 6 hours post run), the 5+ has burned almost 29% battery for the day while the 935 is only 16%.

From what I’ve experienced, the longer GPS usage (and possibly the Stryd usage) triggered the post-activity discharge. And it has gradually worked itself back down to the closer to the rate of discharge of the 935.

Also, of note – I powered the 5+ down about an hour after the activity and the. powered it back up. It didn’t seem to immediately slow the rate of discharge.

Just an update...I charged my Fenix 5 Plus to 100%. I then unplugged it and turned it off and then back on. The battery then showed 95%. There is something really strange going on here. I then charge it back to 100% and power cycled the watch once again. This time the battery showed 96%. Thoughts?

Last night the battery issue got even stranger. As usual my battery only lasted a few days so I gave it another full charge by letting it reach 100% and then keeping it plugged in for an additional hour. I decided to reboot it immediately after unplugging it and the battery level dropped to 89%. So I plugged it back in and after a few minutes the battery jumped back to 100% so I unplugged and rebooted to see the battery move to 90%. I repeated this same process for every percentage from 90%-100%. It's like the battery meter couldn't distinguish between a full charge and anything above 90% so it would just jump to 100% every time the charge would increase by 1%. What made the matter worse is that I don't think the watch charges once the meter thinks it's at 100% so if I had left the watch at 100% without a reboot I would have actually missed out on that last 10% of a charge.

This is EXACTLY what’s going on with mine. I charge to 100% and power cycle the watch and the it reads 95%. I keep doing this process and each time the battery reads 1% more...goes 96%...97%...98%...This is crazy!
