Disappointing battery life

I have just upgraded from a Fenix 5 to a Fenix 5 plus and so far I am finding the battery life to be a lot less than I would expect.

I used to get nearly 2 weeks battery life out of the Fenix 5 but so far the Fenix 5 plus has used 25% in 2 days, both watches are set up and used exactly the same.

I know the Fenix 5 plus is supposed to have slightly less battery life but at this rate it is not even going to last a week.

Does anyone know if this will improve if I cycle the battery a couple of times or if this is normal for this model
  • Makes sense, so its GPS, tbc has anyone tested the variety pack of GPS i.e. GPS, GPS+Galileo ect, and version X, Y or Z?? Maybe I am stupid but i was trying to work out how to END maps on the watch..as in if its a multi thread processor, you move off maps, it keeps GPS running....

... After a full charge there, 21 hours later I am down only 6% after a indoor 40min run, with ANT+, Bluetooth, garmin footpod, HRM-RUN, zwift companion. garmin pay all use and additional run data fields on. So all good there.

I logged some more battery data in my spreadsheet over the last few days, and cleaned up the graph a little. I haven't had a chance to do any GPS activities but I have noticed my battery drain increase over time and that a reboot tends to correct this. You can see this in the circled section of the attached graph.

I want to stress that I am in no way saying that the PABD doesn't exist, because I think it does. However, I do think that over time, even just in watch mode, that the battery load increases for some reason.[IMG2=JSON]{"data-align":"none","data-size":"full","height":"659","width":"1774","src":"https:\/\/i.imgur.com\/lKwgTNT.png"}[/IMG2]
  • The graphs are very helpful, and maybe someone with a deeper knowledge of the inner workings of this watch can spot some sort of trend with what you are showing.

I just wanted to follow-up with my own experience specific to my watch. I am going to continue to say that the OHR is the culprit. I have continued to switch off the OHR for about 2 hours after an activity, and I am no longer seeing the heavy post activity battery drain that I used to notice. I charged the watch to 93% (assuming that is correct, although as we've noted the battery gauge is a separate topic) on Sunday afternoon. It is now late morning on Wednesday. I have done three different 60 minute runs (GPS+Galileo, OHR) since the last charge, and the battery is now at 55%. I would consider that an acceptable amount of drain (38% over about 3 total days, or roughly 13% per day with the GPS activity).

I did just want to mention the battery gauge. As I was charging the watch on Sunday, I had to remove it from the charger 2 different times. Each time I plugged it back in to charge, the percent jumped up double digits from what had been showing. For example, if it said 44%, as soon as I plugged it in the gauge jumped to 56%. That happened each time I unplugged and plugged back in. Good times!

Thanks, the graph has shown me a few things.
    • PABD seems to be a thing.
    • Given enough time, and even without an activity, battery drain will increase on its own.
    • Battery drain increases dramatically once the battery level gets low. Though I wonder if this last item is due to an inaccurate battery meter.

In the past a reboot has corrected the increased battery drain for items 1 and 2, however I wonder if just resetting the OHR would accomplish the same thing. I just charged my watch to 100% so I will the OHR reset theory during this round of testing.
  • Please could you short say the meaning of OHR and PABD ? Couldnt find it in this thread .... Thank you !
  • OHR = Optical Heart Rate
    WHR = Wrist Heart Rate
PABD = Post Activity Battery Drain
  • Just released 4.20 final, have someone tested if PABD is solved?
  • I noticed a strange behaviour: yesterday battery was at 24% I plug the watch to pc for checking fw upgrade, I unplugged it and battery was at 27%. This morning battery was still at 27%. I reboot the watch and now battery is at 32%! Sure there is something wrong with battery meter...
  • I made similar observations to what you mentioned - that battery meter for sure is a mess.
  • Luckily, I have not experienced any excessive battery drain, however I've seen the same as renton82 and bjoern.schulte on a couple of occasions: One time the battery meter instantly went from 76% to 94% (!) when I plugged in the charger, and yesterday it went from 34% to 48% when plugging in. The watch hasn't gone through too many charging cycles yet though - maybe the meter is still learning/calibrating somehow?
