Garmin Descent MK1 & DiveMate

@Garmin-Heath

For more than 6 months, I'am "harassing" team at DiveMate (https://www.divemate.de/) to include Descent MK1 in the Android and iOS versions of their APP for the dive analysis (https://play.google.com/store/apps/d...ek.divemateusb & https://itunes.apple.com/app/id902359157). Even more important is that this APP also allows to transfer all activities from DiveComputer directly to the Phone - via: cable, IR or BT - anywhere, anytime, without the access to the Internet.

Today they replied:
We have been in contact with Garmin but don't get support. Without this and a test device we cannot do anything. You may contact Garmin yourself expressing your wish that you want DiveMate to support the Descent Mk1. May be that helps.

So Garmin-Heath, will you mediate? Because it's a shame that DiveMate supports (almost) all DCs other than the Garmin Descent MK1?
  • Have you provided the DiveMate developers with FIT files of your own? Surely that would help with the bulk of their development and is basically how Diving Log 6.0 and MacDive were able to provide support for the Descent MK1.

As far as I am aware, neither Diving Log 6.0 nor MacDive have a test unit, but both of them support transferring activities from the dive computer to a laptop or desktop computer via a cable without access to the Internet.

With DiveMate Fusion USB, they should be able to pull the FIT files directly from the Descent Mk1 to a iOS device.
  • They told me that they need a test device!

DiveMate Fusion USB is needed only for iOS devices, on Android devices BT or cable is enough.
  • I got the same response when asking DiveMate to support the Descent Mk1. They suggested me to push Garmin.

I am using both the Garmin app log for my dives AND DivetMate. The main reason using DiveMate are two features.
    1. There is a field that the instructor/budy can sign on the smartphone to verify the dive.
    2. The log can be accessed without having an internet connection, something that is not possible using the Garmin app.

If Garmin could add these two possibilities I would be perfectly fine only using the Garmin dive log.
  • I'm not a user of DiveMate, but can say that this should all be possible. I use subsurface, and working on extending support for Descent. Unfortunately I haven't had time to finish it yet, however I can confirm that everything needed to comprehend the fit files is already out in the wild. The fit file is easily parsed with existing libraries, and the data elements are pretty easy to figure out.

DiveMate likely believes that they need the device to interface with, but what they're likely missing is that it's simply mounted as USB file storage. If they can read from any file store, and have a few example fit files to work from, I don't see why they couldn't make it work.
  • I hope that you are developing some kind of an add-on for Subsurface APP (Android) that will allow us to transfer dives and freedives directly from the Descent MK1 to the Smart Phone (via USB OTG or BT) without an Internet connection, as DiveMate can do (unfortunately at present not (yet?) for Descent MK1)!
  • DiveMate has become compatible with DC Garmin Descent MK1 (at least Android application)!

    https://www.divemate.de/
    https://www.divemate.de/compatibility/

Through the USB-OTG connection I easily downloaded all (free) dives to my tablet (and Samsung A8 smart phone). DiveMate also recognizes HR and GPS coordinates for each individual dive (in freedive seesion).
  • Unless I am seeing it wrong you have to uninstall the Garmin connect app if you are using the Divemate app because they say that the two are not compatible. Divemate looks like a good app but I'm not deleting the garmin app off my phone to use it.
  • It's not entirely true what you write 0321tony! If you read the instructions in DiveMate carefully, you will see that this restriction applies only to the transmission via BT (unfortunately I have not tried yet), but via USB-OTG there is no such limit, I tried several times!

I am not having any luck with downloading dives to my android device. Can I not download any dives that have been loaded onto Garmin express via bluetooth? I have it plugged into my phone but it is not recognising anything. I like the looks of the app and would really like to get it to work but not having any luck so far. I really like that I should be able to load dives without having to have service.
  • @0321tony

I also had problems with not recognizing Descent MK1 on my smart phone, but I never had this problem with android tablets. That's why I tried a couple of things and found that my smartphone (via USB-OTG) recognizes Descent MK1 only when the phone is charged 90+ % and the Descent MK1 less than 40%.
