device reporting: 'too hot' ?!

I am getting the following message; 'Cannot range. Device is too hot'. and as such cannot reset or use the device. is there anything I can do to reset or otherwise?
The device does not feel hot too touch, and have shut it down and restarted, but it is still showing the same message. Is there any way to 'reboot' or similar?
I have reset the device as you recommend, however 1) the error message remains the same; 'Cannot range. Device is too hot', and 2) the battery charge is running down even without usage.
